Sharjah Waste To Energy Facility Processes 500,000 Tonnes Of Waste Since 2023 Milestone
BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia Near & Middle East have reached a significant milestone at the Sharjah Waste to Energy facility. Since its launch in 2023, the plant has processed 500,000 tonnes of waste. This achievement is crucial for Sharjah's goal of zero-waste to landfill. The facility has also reduced CO2 emissions by 750,000 tonnes and exported 300 million kWh of electricity.
The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is a pioneering project in the region. It was developed through a joint venture between BEEAH and Masdar, with Veolia joining in 2022 for operations and maintenance. The facility can generate 30 megawatts of low-carbon energy, enough to power up to 28,000 homes annually.

Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of BEEAH, highlighted the importance of this milestone. "This milestone for the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant is more than just a number. It is a big step towards achieving total landfill diversion in Sharjah," he stated. The plant processes hard-to-recycle waste into low-carbon power.
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, expressed pride in the project's rapid progress. "We're proud to witness the Sharjah Waste to Energy plant reach this significant milestone," he said. He emphasised that converting waste into energy supports the UAE's clean energy goals and fosters a circular economy.
The facility employs advanced technology to ensure efficiency and minimal environmental impact. It features a CNIM boiler with a four-pass system and a Martin grate with a five-run design for optimal combustion control. The LAB flue gas treatment system further reduces emissions.
Philippe Bourdeaux from Veolia praised the collaboration's success. "We are immensely proud of achieving this major milestone at Veolia," he remarked. He noted that Veolia's holistic approach maximises resource recovery and supports recycling efforts.
Strategic Alignment
This achievement aligns with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 and Environment Policy. These initiatives aim to reduce carbon footprints and transform waste challenges into development opportunities. The facility's success demonstrates effective collaboration between BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia.
The Emirates Waste to Energy joint venture began in 2017 between Masdar and BEEAH. In 2022, they partnered with Veolia for operations management. This collaboration serves as a global example of sustainable partnerships achieving significant outcomes.
The plant has operated over 300,000 hours without any lost time incidents, showcasing high safety standards on site. This reflects the commitment of all partners involved in maintaining operational excellence while pursuing sustainability goals.
This milestone marks an era of progress for BEEAH, Masdar, and Veolia as they work towards zero-waste futures in Sharjah and beyond. Their efforts contribute significantly to lowering carbon emissions across the UAE regionally.
