Sharjah Safari Celebrates Birth Of Fifth African Savannah Elephant And First Ring-Tailed Lemur Twins

Sharjah Safari, the largest safari outside Africa, has launched its fifth season on 22 September. This season is marked by two significant events: the birth of an African Savannah elephant calf and the first-ever ring-tailed lemur twins. These births highlight Sharjah Safari's commitment to biodiversity and conservation efforts, aligning with global standards for animal care.

The birth of the new elephant calf is a notable achievement in Sharjah Safari’s breeding initiatives. The African Savannah elephant plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Veterinary teams have ensured the health and safety of both mother and calf, adhering to international care standards. This event underscores the importance of preserving such keystone species.

New Arrivals at Sharjah Safari: Elephant and Lemurs

Equally noteworthy is the arrival of the ring-tailed lemur twins. Known for their social nature and unique tails, these lemurs are native to Madagascar and face endangerment. Their birth at Sharjah Safari contributes to global conservation efforts, aiming to secure their future survival through dedicated breeding programs.

In addition to these remarkable births, Sharjah Safari reported 184 new births of various birds and mammals in the second quarter of 2025. This success reflects effective breeding programs supported by habitats that mimic African ecosystems. The safari now hosts 151 species, including giraffes, lions, elephants, rhinos, and rare birds, showcasing its role as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife.

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah, highlighted these achievements as part of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi's vision. She stated: "The new season extends Sharjah Safari’s legacy of achievements, where every birth is a testament to the success of our breeding and care programs."

A Unique Visitor Experience

Al Suwaidi also emphasised that visitors can enjoy an extraordinary experience resembling African landscapes. She noted: "The new season offers visitors an extraordinary experience that mirrors the landscapes of Africa." Visitors can witness rare births like the elephant calf and lemur twins up close, providing moments filled with wonder.

Sharjah Safari serves not only as a recreational destination but also as an educational platform. It offers children, students, and families opportunities to engage with wildlife directly. Interactive programs aim to raise awareness about environmental protection and biodiversity conservation while promoting sustainability values.
