Sharjah Public Libraries Celebrates Centenary As A Driving Force Behind Cultural And Intellectual Growth

Sharjah Public Libraries (SPL) has played a pivotal role in the emirate's cultural and intellectual growth for many years. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, SPL is recognised for its significant contribution to fostering knowledge and literature. This milestone highlights Sharjah's transformation into a global cultural hub, driven by the library's enduring impact on society.

The centenary of SPL coincides with the UAE's National Reading Month, underscoring the importance of libraries in cultural development. Various programmes have been launched to celebrate this occasion, emphasising the role of libraries in Sharjah's cultural renaissance. These initiatives align with the emirate's vision of using knowledge as a catalyst for innovation and progress.

Centenary of Sharjah Public Libraries Highlights Cultural Growth

Sheikh Abdullah bin Majid Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Equestrian and Racing Club, expressed gratitude to Sharjah's Ruler for his support. He stated, "Our participation is both a tribute to the past and a reaffirmation of our dedication to supporting cultural and educational initiatives that enrich society and promote cultural awareness."

Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), highlighted SPL's role in shaping a vibrant cultural landscape. He said, "As we mark the UAE's National Reading Month alongside SPL's centenary, we reflect on their pivotal role in shaping a thriving cultural and intellectual landscape." Under Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi’s leadership, these initiatives have expanded beyond traditional boundaries.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al Musallam from the Sharjah Institute for Heritage noted their commitment to preserving heritage under the Ruler’s directives. The institute restored Al Hisn Library and Al Bait Al Gharbi as part of SPL’s centenary celebrations. These restorations highlight key milestones in Sharjah’s history and its rich cultural heritage.

Promoting Knowledge and Heritage

Dr. Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi from the Arabic Language Academy remarked on SPL’s centenary coinciding with National Reading Month. He stated that SPL has been crucial in promoting scientific progress while preserving Arab heritage. Marwa Al Aqroubi from House of Wisdom echoed this sentiment, emphasising initiatives that encourage reading among citizens and visitors alike.

Rashid Al Kous from Emirates Publishers Association highlighted SPL’s centenary as a significant milestone in Sharjah’s cultural journey. He stressed that this occasion provides an important platform for exchanging ideas to foster literary engagement from an early age.

The Role of Education

Dr. Tod Laursen from American University of Sharjah (AUS) commented on SPL’s centennial reflecting Sharjah’s commitment to knowledge and culture. He said, "SPL centennial reflects the emirate's deep-rooted commitment to knowledge, culture and intellectual growth—values at the heart of our mission at AUS." Libraries nurture curiosity and drive community progress through reading.

Ali Ahmed Al Hosani from Sharjah Private Education Authority noted private school students' participation in celebrating SPL’s centenary reflects their vision of embedding reading into future generations’ education. This event renews commitment to investing in intellectual development, inspiring students towards leadership roles in various fields.
