Sharjah Ruler Commemorates Century Of Libraries At Centennial Celebration Event

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, attended the "Sharjah Libraries Centennial" celebration at Sharjah Fort. This event marked 100 years since the libraries' founding by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr bin Khalid Al Qasimi, celebrated under the theme "100 Years of Stories." His Highness expressed joy on this significant occasion, reflecting on the libraries' journey over the decades.

During his speech, His Highness praised Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, describing him as humble, generous, and compassionate. He shared a personal story where Sheikh Sultan showed remarkable patience when a man accidentally stained his clothes with blood. Instead of anger, Sheikh Sultan advised caution in future purchases and returned the man's money.

Sheikh Dr. Sultan highlighted Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi's intellectual prowess and passion for literature. He noted Sheikh Sultan’s Nabati poetry for its grammatical precision and linguistic excellence. His Highness also inherited Sheikh Sultan's personal library, which became the foundation for Sharjah’s libraries.

The library has moved several times before settling at Cultural Square. It has impacted every home in Sharjah through the "Library in Every Home" initiative. Today, thousands of libraries ensure no home in Sharjah is without access to books.

The centennial celebration began with traditional performances welcoming His Highness to Sharjah Fort. Upon arrival, he was greeted by various dignitaries including H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi and Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi. The event featured vibrant artistic displays reflecting regional cultural heritage.

His Highness visited the house of Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, now an open exhibition showcasing his life and legacy. He then inaugurated the Sharjah Education Museum at Al Qasimiya School, UAE's first formal school founded in the 1940s.

A Journey Through History

The museum tour included a performance titled "My Homeland," celebrating Arab heritage and unity. His Highness explored classrooms where he once studied, gaining insights into their historical significance. The visit also featured an Arabian horse performance at Sharjah Fort Stables.

The stables were historically dedicated to breeding purebred Arabian horses symbolising strength and nobility. They have evolved into a vital part of Sharjah’s historical identity, preserving its equestrian heritage.

Unveiling New Initiatives

His Highness unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the centenary of the Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi Library at Sharjah Fort. This launch initiated a year-long celebration featuring diverse events organised around themes like literary beginnings and cultural sustainability.

The library's history dates back to 1925 when it was founded as "Al Qasimiya Library" by Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi in Sharjah Fort. Over time, it evolved under various rulers before becoming part of University City in 1998.

A Hub for Knowledge

Today, Sharjah Libraries operate branches across Kalba, Dibba Al-Hisn, Khorfakkan, Al Dhaid, and Wadi Al Helo. These branches are equipped with advanced technologies to meet community needs while promoting reading culture as part of Sharjah’s developmental journey.

The centennial programme includes seminars, exhibitions, sessions, and workshops involving over 13 government entities throughout 2025. These activities aim to celebrate knowledge and education while fostering community development within the emirate.
