Inaugural Sharjah Conference Explores Arabic Language's Digital Future
The inaugural Sharjah International Conference for the Arabic Language recently unfolded in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, marking a significant milestone in the academic and cultural landscape of the region. Organized by the University of Sharjah, this event drew attention with its focus on "Prospects for Digital Transformation and Sustainability," underlining the critical juncture at which the Arabic language finds itself in the digital era.
The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University, signifying the high importance placed on this event. A key address was delivered by Dr. Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, who extended his gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for his patronage and underscored the imperative of advancing and preserving the Arabic language as part of the nation's heritage.
Dr. Zahia Ismail Al Salhi, Acting Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, spoke on the historical significance of the Arabic language and its golden age during Islamic civilization. She stressed the necessity of its study amidst the competition from global languages. Dr. Maryam Saeed Blajid, Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature and Head of the Conference Organizing Committee, welcomed attendees and highlighted the department's active role in promoting Arabic through various academic initiatives.
The conference aimed to tackle challenges related to digitization and computer technologies facing the Arabic language. It provided a platform for researchers and scientists to present their research, contributing towards achieving the conference's goals. The University of Sharjah's commitment to teaching and research in Arabic was reinforced through discussions on developing Arabic scientific language, challenges of Arabization and digitization, and integrating linguistic policies across 13 sessions spanning two days.
Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi honored speakers, participants, session directors, and sponsors during the opening ceremony, acknowledging their contributions to the success of this landmark conference.
