Sharjah Roads And Transport Authority Launches First Phase Of Electric Bus Rides For Sustainable Travel
The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has initiated the first phase of electric bus services, marking a step towards eco-friendly public transport. This initiative includes routes to three cities, aligning with the UAE's Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. The aim is to enhance mass transit services while transitioning to sustainable transport solutions.
Engineer Youssef Khamis Al Othmani, Chairman of SRTA, stated that ten electric buses will serve Dubai, Ajman, and Al Hamriyah. These destinations were chosen based on studies and statistics from the Intercity Transport Department. The criteria included high passenger demand and strategic importance.

The SRTA is committed to implementing top-quality standards in its environmental strategy. Comprehensive plans are in place to achieve green transportation goals and cut carbon emissions. This involves developing mechanisms compatible with sustainable initiatives and launching eco-friendly transport options.
Earlier, SRTA signed a contract to acquire ten electric buses after testing two models for efficiency. Various models were evaluated for compatibility with UAE's climate conditions before finalising the selection. The next phase will see more electric buses in Sharjah, supporting UAE's renewable energy goals.
The chosen buses are King Long models, featuring standard specifications like a length of 9 meters and a capacity for 41 passengers. They meet international safety standards and have received the European safety certificate. These buses are air-conditioned with a battery cooling system suitable for UAE's climate.
Al Othmani emphasised SRTA's commitment to environmental sustainability through green transportation initiatives. "This comes through working to create work mechanisms that are compatible with sustainable initiatives," he noted, highlighting the alignment with government directives for safe and sustainable transport environments.
The introduction of these electric buses is part of a broader effort by SRTA to reduce carbon footprints in public transportation by using renewable energy sources. This aligns with both UAE national goals and Sharjah government's directives for environmental responsibility.
As this initiative progresses, it represents a significant move towards reducing reliance on traditional fuel-based transport systems in Sharjah. The focus remains on expanding the fleet of electric buses to further support environmental sustainability efforts across the region.
