Sharjah’s IGCF 2024 Spotlights Cultural Exchange And Diplomatic Values

The Department of Government Relations (DGR) in Sharjah played a significant role in the 13th International Government Communication Forum (IGCF 2024). They hosted discussions on cultural exchange and diplomatic values for children. Collaborations with Alliance Française and King Sejong Institute led to two insightful workshops.

Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of DGR, highlighted the importance of cultural curiosity. He stated, "Being worldly is an important skill. Inviting countries to showcase their culture, such as during Sharjah Heritage Week, helps build bridges that connect Sharjah with the world. Although there are many similarities between nations and peoples, it’s also a privilege to be culturally curious, discovering what’s different between cultures and then celebrating it."

The first discussion featured Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi alongside Antoine Delcourt, Ambassador of Belgium to the UAE, and Alison Milton, Ambassador of Ireland to the UAE. Sheikh Fahim shared recent diplomatic efforts, including a delegation to Italy. He announced an exhibition of Roman artefacts from Sharjah at the Colosseum in Rome.

IGCF 2024: Cultural Diplomacy in Focus

Antoine Delcourt spoke about adaptability within culture in Belgium. He said, "Even within our own borders, there are cross-cultural practices; Belgium has three official languages with strong French and Dutch connections. Having an open understanding and appreciation for different cultures can strengthen connections between people beyond culture itself, leading to additional opportunities within trade and investment."

Alison Milton emphasised that cultural diplomacy extends beyond art and heritage. She noted, "I believe cross-cultural connection is about what unites us, but we also have incredible differences, and these differences can also be tools to inspire curiosity and dialogue, and ultimately a positive thing."

DGR organised a panel discussion with the Arab Parliament for the Child. This session focused on instilling diplomatic values in children across Arab nations. Young members like Vice-Presidents Hebat Allah Al-Ilmiyya from Morocco and Yassine Okasha from Egypt participated.

The parliament's role in fostering dialogue among Arab youth was highlighted. Members discussed their commitment to education and children's rights. They explored future directions for expanding their reach and deepening engagement with children across the Arab region.

Workshops on Linguistic and Cultural Exchange

DGR's pavilion hosted a workshop titled "French Words of Arabic Origin – Civilisational Interaction" with Alliance Française. It explored linguistic connections between Arabic and French languages. The historical significance of French words derived from Arabic was discussed.

The second workshop, "Korean Heritage in Sharjah," was organised with King Sejong Institute. It covered the history of cultural exchange between Korea and Sharjah. Visitors learned about Korean written language and calligraphy.

The Sharjah-based Arab Parliament for the Child was established in 2018 with DGR's support. It represents youth across all Arab countries with 64 members from 16 states.

This forum underscored DGR's dedication to fostering international bonds through cultural exchange and educating young diplomats.
