Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial To Celebrate Three Innovators In Arabic Calligraphy

The Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial is set to commence its 11th edition on 2nd October, hosted by the Sharjah Department of Culture. This event, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, will honour three notable figures in Arabic calligraphy. These include Emirati calligrapher Khalid Ali Al Jalaf, Iraqi researcher Idham Khalid Hanish, and Spanish historian José Miguel Poyatos.

The biennial will feature solo exhibitions showcasing the works of these honorees at the Calligraphy Square in Sharjah's centre on the opening day. These exhibitions will remain accessible to the public for the entire duration of the event. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Qaseer, Director of Cultural Affairs at the Department of Culture and Director of the Sharjah Calligraphy Biennial, highlighted the significance of recognising innovators in this universal art form.

"This aligns with the directives of the Ruler of Sharjah and reinforces the biennial's mission to celebrate the creators of this authentic art form," stated Al Qaseer. The current edition includes a variety of group and solo exhibitions curated by experts in calligraphy. The general exhibition will display original pieces from artists around the globe, while other showcases will focus on contemporary works and expressions by Emirati calligraphers.

In addition to these exhibitions, there will be a special focus on reviving forgotten scripts. Turkish artist Davut Bektas and Iranian artist Sadegh Shafiee are set to present their solo exhibitions titled "Golden Letters" and "Notations on the Pen," respectively. These contributions aim to enrich the biennial with diverse perspectives on calligraphy.

The biennial will also benefit from collaboration with several local institutions, enhancing its reach and impact within the community. This partnership aims to foster a deeper appreciation for calligraphy as an art form that combines profound meaning with eloquence.

The event promises a rich tapestry of artistic expression through various exhibitions that celebrate both traditional and modern interpretations of calligraphy. By honouring distinguished contributors to this field, it seeks to inspire future generations and preserve this cultural heritage.
