Second Global Aviation And Aerospace Skills Task Force Meeting Concludes With Focus On Workforce Development

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) recently hosted the second Global Aviation and Aerospace Skills Task Force (GAAST) meeting in Abu Dhabi. Held from 18th to 22nd November 2024, this event gathered key stakeholders, including industry leaders and international organisations, to discuss workforce development in aviation and aerospace. The focus was on creating strategies to meet future skills needs.

A significant aspect of the meeting was enhancing cooperation among GAAST members, especially between states and industry players. The UAE invited the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as an observer, aligning GAAST's goals with global aviation priorities. This step supports ICAO’s Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) and No Country Left Behind (NCLB) initiatives.

GAAST Meeting Concludes in Abu Dhabi

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of GCAA, emphasised the UAE's commitment to international collaboration. He remarked, "The UAE strongly believes in the power of collaboration to address global challenges. Hosting the GAAST meeting reflects our commitment to ensuring the sustainability of the aviation industry by developing the skills and capabilities required for its future growth. We are proud to support GAAST’s vital work and its alignment with ICAO’s initiatives."

The Abu Dhabi meeting provided a platform for discussing strategic workforce planning and training initiatives. These discussions aim to ensure that the aviation and aerospace sectors remain resilient against future challenges. By focusing on capacity-building, stakeholders aim to prepare these industries for upcoming demands.

Nina Brooks, Chairperson of GAAST, acknowledged the task force's mission and expressed appreciation for the UAE's hospitality. She stated, "GAAST plays a pivotal role in addressing the critical skills needs for the aviation and aerospace industry worldwide. This meeting has been instrumental in driving forward our collective goals. On behalf of GAAST, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the UAE for hosting this event and providing an inspiring platform for progress."

Impact on Future Assemblies

The outcomes from this meeting will contribute significantly to ICAO’s 42nd Assembly in Autumn 2025. These discussions are expected to drive impactful global dialogue and action within the aviation sector. By aligning efforts with ICAO's initiatives, GAAST aims to foster a more skilled workforce globally.

The collaborative environment at this event highlighted the importance of strategic planning in workforce development. Through these efforts, stakeholders are working towards ensuring that aviation remains sustainable and prepared for future growth opportunities.
