Saudi Smart Grids Conference Launches In Riyadh With Focus On Energy Efficiency
Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy, inaugurated the 12th Saudi Smart Grids Conference in Riyadh. The event, themed "Energy and Sustainability," focuses on renewable energy, grid integration, and energy efficiency. It also explores innovations in energy storage technology. The conference aims to address key topics relevant to the energy sector's future.
Saudi Arabia's national grid is the largest in the Middle East and Africa. The expansion of transmission and distribution networks continues to enhance stability and efficiency. Flexible transmission system technologies are being developed to promote energy exchange and reduce losses.

The minister highlighted the importance of smart grid technologies in transitioning to sustainable energy. He stated that these grids integrate smart metering devices, process automation, and communication technologies. This integration enhances electricity production, transmission, distribution, and consumption.
Since 2021, over 11 million smart meters have been installed across Saudi Arabia. These meters are crucial for improving energy efficiency by allowing consumers to monitor their usage in real time through smart applications. This capability helps consumers make informed decisions about conserving electricity.
The Ministry of Energy aims to automate 40% of distribution networks by 2025. Currently, they have achieved 32% of this target. By 2026, nine advanced control centers will be developed with state-of-the-art technologies for precise real-time monitoring of network systems.
The minister discussed the variable nature of renewable energy sources due to weather conditions. Efforts are underway to develop battery storage systems with capacities up to 26 GWh, aiming for 48 GWh by 2030. These systems will help stabilize renewable energy supply.
Four regional control centers and one national center have been established with advanced systems for efficient grid monitoring and operation. These centers enhance grid security and flexibility by enabling precise control over electricity distribution.
Following the opening ceremony, several energy-related agreements were signed. The minister also honoured winners of the Energy Hackathon, where over 60 participants showcased innovative solutions in energy storage, efficiency, and sustainability.
The three-day conference will feature more than 40 scientific papers discussing the latest innovations in smart grids. It will highlight opportunities for private-sector involvement and future growth in sustainable solutions within the energy sector.
This event underscores Saudi Arabia's commitment to achieving Vision 2030 goals through digital transformation in the energy sector.
