Saudi Fund For Development Celebrates Five Decades Of Worldwide Impact With $20 Billion Investment

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) marked its 50th anniversary with a celebration under the theme "50 Years of Global Impact." The event saw attendance from notable figures including Prince Turki AlFaisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Ahmed Aqeel Al-Khateeb, Mohammed Sulaiman Al Jasser, Ousmane Dione, and Fatima Yasmin. Dignitaries, senior officials, ambassadors to Saudi Arabia, UN representatives, and heads of regional and international organizations were also present.

In his opening remarks, Al-Khateeb highlighted SFD's progress and achievements under the guidance of the Kingdom's leadership. He emphasized that the fund has significantly contributed to the development and prosperity of numerous societies. Over 800 projects in more than 100 developing countries have been financed by SFD, amounting to over $20 billion. These projects span vital sectors such as education, health, water, energy, agriculture, and transportation.

SFD Marks 50 Years of Global Aid

SFD's health initiatives have had a profound impact on communities in need of medical care. The fund has supported 77 health projects resulting in the establishment of 325 health facilities with a capacity exceeding 25,000 beds across 45 countries. Notable among these is King Faisal Hospital in Rwanda, which performed 32 kidney transplants in one year. Additionally, King Khalid University Hospital in Burundi has enhanced medical personnel training and healthcare services.

Prince Turki reflected on the inspiring journey of SFD over the past five decades. He noted that this legacy was initiated by the late King Faisal bin Abdulaziz. Prince Turki recalled an interview where King Faisal envisioned Saudi Arabia as a beacon for humanity after 50 years.

SFD has played a crucial role in Africa by financing 433 projects worth approximately $11.5 billion. One significant project is the Metolong Dam in Lesotho, which received $25 million from SFD. This dam benefits around 280,000 people by enhancing renewable energy production and ensuring water security.

In Asia, SFD has financed 271 development projects totaling about $7.8 billion. A key project is the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project in Pakistan, which received $240 million from SFD. This project improves energy and water supplies for daily use and agriculture while mitigating flood risks. It also boosts Pakistan's clean energy production by generating 800 megawatts of electricity and storing approximately 1.6 million cubic meters of water.

Collaborations for Sustainable Development

Al-Khateeb underscored the importance of continued cooperation to achieve sustainable development globally. In collaboration with funding partners, SFD financed 27 development projects across 23 developing countries in 2023 alone.

Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad expressed pride in SFD's commitment to advancing sustainable development over five decades. He stated: "As we celebrate five decades of SFD influential work, we are proud of our firm commitment to advancing sustainable development to achieve economic prosperity in various beneficiary countries."

Renewable Energy Projects

During the anniversary event, SFD signed an agreement with the Asian Development Bank to develop renewable energy infrastructure in the Solomon Islands—SFD's first project there. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and promote sustainable development through renewable energy infrastructure.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, SFD has funded 21 projects worth around $951 million. Noteworthy projects include rehabilitating Havana’s water systems with SAR35 million and rebuilding St. Jude Hospital in Saint Lucia with $75 million.

Infrastructure Rehabilitation Efforts

SFD has also supported Eastern Europe by financing 14 development projects with a total investment of $303 million. A significant project involved rehabilitating infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina with $73.8 million allocated for rebuilding roads and bridges to enhance transportation and economic activities.

The celebration highlighted SFD's extensive contributions to global development over five decades through various impactful projects across multiple regions.
