RTA Partners With Baidu To Launch Trials Of 50 Autonomous Taxis In Dubai By 2025
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with Baidu's Apollo Go to introduce autonomous taxis across the emirate. This collaboration will see 50 autonomous vehicles begin testing soon, with a full public launch planned for 2026. The agreement was formalised in a ceremony attended by key figures from both organisations, including Mattar Al Tayer and Halton Niu.
The MoU outlines the deployment of Baidu's latest RT6 autonomous taxis, equipped with 40 sensors for optimal safety and automation. These vehicles have already proven successful in China. The initial phase involves data collection and testing with 50 vehicles, expanding to 1,000 taxis over three years based on performance standards.

This initiative marks Apollo Go's first international venture outside China and Hong Kong. The company has achieved over 150 million kilometres of safe driving and completed more than 10 million autonomous trips, making it the largest operator of such fleets globally. Their expansion into Dubai underscores the city's commitment to advanced transport solutions.
Al Tayer expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Baidu’s Apollo Go, highlighting their pioneering role in China's autonomous taxi service. He emphasised the importance of integrating AI, big data, and automation to develop future smart cities. This partnership aligns with Dubai's strategy to convert 25% of all trips into autonomous journeys by 2030.
Al Tayer stated that self-driving transport is now a reality, with global companies advancing necessary technologies. Governments are focusing on licensing operations and developing infrastructure for these vehicles. RTA is committed to maintaining Dubai’s leadership in autonomous mobility through trials of various vehicle types.
Halton Niu noted that this collaboration showcases Dubai's proactive approach to innovative technology and supports the UAE's goal of leading in autonomous driving. Apollo Go aims to provide safe and efficient smart mobility services worldwide by working closely with local partners.
Enhancing Quality of Life
Ahmed Bahrozyan highlighted that self-driving transport will enhance life quality by offering mobility freedom to those unable to drive, like children and the elderly. It will also improve road safety while saving time and effort. Autonomous driving technologies are seen as vital for future transportation solutions.
The MoU with Baidu’s Apollo Go is crucial for developing autonomous driving technology in Dubai through field trials and creating an operational roadmap for autonomous taxis. This partnership strengthens cooperation and knowledge sharing between the two entities.
The collaboration between RTA and Baidu represents a significant step towards achieving Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy goals. By embracing cutting-edge technologies, Dubai aims to position itself at the forefront of sustainable transport solutions globally.
