RTA Completes Installation Of 141 Bus Shelters To Enhance Public Transport In Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 141 bus shelters, marking progress in its plan to install 762 shelters across the city. These modern shelters are designed to enhance comfort for public transport users. The project is 40% complete, with a target to finish by the end of 2025. Once completed, these shelters will serve over 182 million riders annually.
The new shelters support multiple bus routes, with some accommodating more than ten routes each. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated that this initiative reflects RTA's commitment to improving public transport infrastructure. "This project underscores RTA’s dedication to advancing development initiatives across Dubai," he said.

Al Tayer highlighted that the locations for these shelters were strategically chosen to meet the needs of densely populated areas and future operational demands. Construction began in areas with existing infrastructure to speed up progress and increase shelter availability for bus users. This approach ensures integration with individual mobility options.
The design of these shelters adheres to the Dubai Code for People of Determination, providing designated spaces for wheelchair users. This aligns with the "My Community... A City for Everyone" initiative by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The initiative aims to make Dubai a friendly city for people of determination.
Efforts are ongoing to establish necessary infrastructure, particularly for air-conditioned shelters. Additional features include shaded outdoor areas, advertising spaces, and information screens displaying bus network maps and schedules. These enhancements aim to improve the commuting experience by providing essential information and services.
Categorisation Based on Usage
The bus shelters have been categorised into four levels based on daily usage: primary shelters for locations with over 750 daily users, secondary shelters for 250 to 750 daily users, basic shelters for 100 to 250 daily users, and drop-off/pick-up shelters for fewer than 100 daily users.
This project is part of RTA's broader strategy to address urban expansion and population growth while ensuring safe and world-class public transport services. By offering premium mobility services, RTA aims to enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors in Dubai.
