RTA Constructs Six New Pedestrian And Cyclist Bridges To Enhance Road Safety In Dubai
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has finalised two pedestrian bridges on Sheikh Rashid Street and Al Mina Street as part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. Additionally, six pedestrian and cyclist bridges have been constructed across major streets in Dubai. Five of these will open by year-end, while the sixth is expected to be completed in early 2027. Plans are also underway for 23 more bridges by 2030.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated: "RTA’s drive to deliver pedestrian bridges reflects the directives of the leadership to enhance road safety, provide a safe and sustainable mobility environment for all road users, and transform Dubai into a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city. It also supports the city’s quality of life agenda."

The existing and planned pedestrian bridges form a network connecting residential areas with key attractions in Dubai. This encourages residents to use sustainable transport options for short journeys. The number of pedestrian bridges and underpasses has increased from 26 in 2006 to 177 by the end of 2024, marking a significant growth.
Al Tayer highlighted that RTA's efforts have led to a reduction in pedestrian fatalities from 9.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007 to just 0.3 deaths in 2024, a decrease of 97%. Pedestrian satisfaction levels have reached 88%, with trips increasing from 307 million in 2023 to 326 million in 2024, reflecting a growth rate of 6%.
The RTA plans to build an additional 23 pedestrian bridges by the end of this decade. These projects are based on detailed field studies considering factors like population density, land use integration, tourism attractions, economic hubs, and proximity to public transport stations. This approach aims to improve traffic flow and ensure safe movement for pedestrians and cyclists.
Cycling trips have also seen an increase from 44 million in 2023 to 46.6 million in 2024, showing a rise of approximately 5%. The RTA prioritises pedestrian safety as a key component of Dubai's transport system. The construction aligns with Dubai’s Traffic Safety Strategy aiming for Zero Fatalities.
Advanced Bridge Features
RTA continues building more pedestrian bridges adhering to international design standards while incorporating creative elements. These structures include advanced systems such as electromechanical setups, fire alarms, firefighting systems, remote monitoring capabilities, and other safety features. Some bridges even offer dedicated paths and bike racks for cyclists.
The ongoing development reflects RTA's commitment to enhancing road safety and integrating infrastructure across Dubai. By focusing on sustainable mobility solutions, RTA aims to position Dubai among global leaders in road safety.
