Rory McIlroy Crowned Winner Of DP World Tour Championship 2023 By Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed
Rory McIlroy from Northern Ireland emerged victorious in the 16th DP World Tour Championship. H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, awarded him the title at Jumeirah Golf Estates Club, Dubai. This event is part of the prestigious Rolex Series and concludes the Race to Dubai season.
The tournament featured the top 50 golfers in the Race to Dubai rankings, with a prize fund totalling $10 million. McIlroy received the Harry Vardon Cup for being the top-ranked player in the Race to Dubai for the sixth time and third consecutive year. His previous wins were in 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, and 2023.
McIlroy earned $3 million as the tournament champion and an additional $2 million for leading the Race to Dubai rankings, accumulating $5 million in total earnings. He finished at 15-under-par, two strokes ahead of Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, who scored 13-under-par.
The awards ceremony was graced by several dignitaries including Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World Group; Khalfan Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council; and Major General Pilot Abdullah Al Sayed Al Hashemi, Vice Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation.
This championship wrapped up an outstanding season where UAE hosted "final playoffs" under a new format. It began with Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship at Yas Links featuring top 70 players and concluded with DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates with top 50 players.
The 2024 DP World Tour season will feature 44 tournaments across 24 countries. These events attract elite golfers worldwide competing under 'Race to Dubai' banner.
The tournament not only highlighted McIlroy's exceptional skills but also showcased UAE's growing prominence in hosting international sporting events. The successful conclusion of this championship underscores Dubai’s commitment to promoting sports excellence globally.
