UAE Launches Comprehensive White Paper On Research And Development In Radiological Protection

The UAE's Radiation Protection Committee, led by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), has introduced a groundbreaking white paper titled "Research and Development in Radiological Protection in the United Arab Emirates." This initiative represents the first comprehensive programme of its kind within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. The document signifies a major step forward in the UAE’s dedication to enhancing radiation safety, sustainability, and innovation in nuclear science.

Radiological protection is crucial for ensuring safe radiation use across various sectors like healthcare, industry, energy, and environmental protection. The white paper aims to bolster the UAE's capabilities by focusing on key research areas. These include medical applications, studying radiation's impact on ecosystems for environmental protection, and developing new technologies for emergency preparedness and response.

UAE Unveils White Paper on Radiological Protection

The study aligns with the UAE Centennial 2071 vision, supporting broader national goals in science, technology, and innovation. By investing in radiological protection research, the UAE seeks to tackle current challenges while preparing for future advancements in radiation applications. This proactive approach ensures that the nation remains at the forefront of scientific progress.

A working group will be established by the Radiation Protection Committee to manage research activities. This group will set national research priorities and facilitate data sharing among institutions. They will implement a structured roadmap for R&D in radiological protection with both short-term and long-term objectives.

The roadmap includes developing UAE-specific radiation protection guidelines and risk assessment models. It also aims to introduce innovative technologies such as AI-powered radiation monitoring systems. Additionally, it will contribute to international research collaborations on radiation effects and safety standards.

Established in 2011 under FANR's leadership, the Radiation Protection Committee comprises 17 federal and local government agencies. Its mission is to develop and strengthen the UAE's radiation protection infrastructure. The committee also focuses on building capacity and advising on necessary radiation regulations and policies.

This initiative not only supports safe nuclear facility operations but also strengthens partnerships with academia to foster research programmes. By doing so, it ensures that the UAE remains a leader in radiological protection research within the region.
