Registration Now Open For Q1 2026 Clean Energy Certificates Auction By EWEC
Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has opened registration for its Q1 2026 Clean Energy Certificates (CECs) auction. This auction will conclude on 9th January 2026. The initiative follows a trend of increasing participation in Abu Dhabi, where businesses and individuals are using CECs to confirm their electricity is sourced from renewable or clean energy.
In 2025, the CEC auctions saw significant interest from various sectors such as healthcare, industrial, retail, real estate, events, and commercial industries. This reflects a growing shift towards verified renewable and clean energy consumption. The sales reached some of the highest levels since the scheme's inception.

CECs are the sole accredited tool in Abu Dhabi for claiming the use of renewable and clean energy. They help entities make measurable progress in reducing Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions while aligning with national climate goals. These certificates are issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy.
Eng. Mohamed Almarzooqi, Chief Asset Development and Management Officer at EWEC, stated that the increase in CEC usage shows how organisations in Abu Dhabi are turning decarbonisation plans into verified outcomes. "The continued growth in Clean Energy Certificates usage reflects how organisations across Abu Dhabi are turning decarbonisation plans into verified outcomes," he said.
The CECs adhere to the International Renewable Energy Certificate Standard (I-REC Standard). They are issued in units of 1 megawatt-hour (MWh), providing a transparent and internationally recognised pathway to adopting renewable energy. This allows companies to credibly track their sustainability goals and reduce emissions.
EWEC serves as the Single Registrant and Auction Operator for this scheme. The certificates enable companies to demonstrate climate leadership aligned with national objectives like the UAE Net Zero By 2050 Strategic Initiative.
For those interested in participating in the CEC auction, further details can be found on EWEC's website or by contacting their Clean Energy Certificates team directly.
The ongoing growth in CEC adoption highlights a significant shift towards cleaner energy solutions across various sectors in Abu Dhabi. This trend underscores a commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility within the emirate's economy.
