Ramadan Food Imports Rise At Jebel Ali As DP World Reports Steady Regional Demand

Retailers in Gulf markets are bringing in Ramadan goods earlier each year, according to DP World trade data, which shows higher shipments of staple foods and household items moving through Jebel Ali Port between six and eight weeks before the holy month, as companies work to secure supply and stable prices.

The data highlights how Ramadan triggers a fast, concentrated rise in household consumption across the region. Businesses are therefore building inventory in advance to manage demand more evenly, limit last‑minute supply pressure, and keep store shelves stocked for iftar, suhoor and larger family gatherings without sharp price swings.

Ramadan food imports rise at Jebel Ali

Analysis of average volumes between 2023 and 2025 shows clear changes versus a standard month. Rice imports rise by around 25 percent, while onions and garlic increase by about 35 percent. Imports of nuts, including walnuts, almonds and pistachios, go up roughly 15 percent, and beverages such as juices and soft drinks grow by around 5 percent.

These shifts in volumes underline a structured planning cycle for retailers rather than last‑minute buying. Many of these goods are central to regional cooking and hospitality during Ramadan, so importers appear to be using historical consumption patterns to forecast needs and secure supply contracts with producers and distributors early.

During this build‑up period, Jebel Ali functions as a key entry and consolidation hub for cargo coming from Asia, the Indian Subcontinent and Europe. A combination of sea, air and land transport links allows goods to be redirected quickly into markets across the GCC and East Africa, even when volumes increase at the start of the year.

Operational planning at the port during Ramadan preparation focuses on a broad range of consumer products. These include packaged foods, and fresh, chilled and frozen items. Extended operating hours, plus closer coordination across the supply chain, help protect temperature‑sensitive shipments and have lifted handling efficiency by more than 25 percent during the busiest periods.

Jebel Ali also supports exporters gearing up for Ramadan sales in other markets. DP World data shows that during January and February, date exports are almost 60 percent higher than in a typical month. These flows supply neighbouring countries across the GCC and East Africa, meeting seasonal demand for dates as a core food item.

India, Morocco and Bangladesh were the top destination markets for date exports through Jebel Ali Port last year. Together these three countries accounted for 65 percent of total date export volumes, underlining the port’s role in serving both regional and wider international demand ahead of and during Ramadan.

Demand linked to Ramadan is not limited to food categories. Imports of kitchen and tableware rise by around 10 percent, while shipments of small kitchen appliances increase by roughly 9 percent. Some of the rise seen in January is tied to regular post‑year‑end restocking, yet DP World notes that recurring seasonal patterns indicate Ramadan is an added driver.

Commenting on these trends, Abdulla bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, said: "Ramadan is a time when demand rises quickly. What we see each year is customers planning further ahead. By bringing ports, logistics and transport together through Jebel Ali, we are able to move goods early and keep supplies steady as demand increases across the region."

Across 2023 to 2025, the pattern of early stock‑building, higher import volumes for key staples, increased non‑food shipments and strong date exports shows how Ramadan has become a clearly defined planning season for regional supply chains, with Jebel Ali Port and DP World’s logistics network acting as central platforms for this activity.
