Qatar's Tourism Sector Predicted To Inject $25 Billion Into Economy By 2024
Qatar's travel and tourism sector is set to a significant contribution to the national economy in 2024, with forecasts predicting an injection of QAR90.8 billion ($24.94 billion), accounting for 11.3 percent of the country's total economic output. This was released in the World Travel & Tourism Council's (WTTC) 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR), which also highlighted the sector's potential to support more than 334,500 jobs, representing 15.8 percent of Qatar's total workforce.
Furthermore, the WTTC's findings indicate a substantial increase in spending by international travelers in Qatar for 2024, reaching an all-time high of QAR69.6 billion ($19.12 billion). Domestic spending within the travel sector is also expected to see a rise, hitting QAR12 billion ($3.30 billion). These forecasts underscore the effective efforts made by Qatar to foster public-private partnerships, which in turn have significantly enhanced the travel and tourism landscape, offering visitors a richer and more varied experience.
Julia Simpson, President & CEO of the WTTC, lauded Qatar's travel and tourism sector for its strong performance. "Qatar's travel and tourism sector is poised to break records this year, highlighting its significance as a leading destination in the Middle East," she remarked.
The long-term outlook for Qatar's travel and tourism sector is equally optimistic, with the WTTC forecasting its annual contribution to the GDP to surpass QAR135 billion ($37.08 billion) by 2034. This would represent nearly 13 percent of Qatar's economy. Additionally, employment within the sector is expected to reach close to 458,000, equating to one in five residents working within the travel and tourism industry.
In the preceding year, Qatar's travel and tourism sector witnessed a remarkable 31 percent growth in its contribution to the GDP, totaling QAR81.2 billion. This growth not only underscores the sector's vital role in the economy but also its capacity for job creation, with more than 20,300 new roles added, raising the total employment figure to nearly 286,000 across the nation. Moreover, domestic visitor spending achieved a new record of QAR1.4 billion.
Middle East Tourism Trends
The WTTC's analysis extends beyond Qatar, shedding light on the broader momentum within the Middle East's travel and tourism sector. In 2023, the sector experienced a 25 percent growth, with its valuation nearing $460 billion. This expansion facilitated the creation of approximately 7.75 million jobs. Notably, international spending within the sector soared by 50 percent to reach $179.8 billion, while domestic spending grew by 16.5 percent, totaling $205 billion.
Looking forward, the WTTC anticipates the Middle East's travel and tourism sector to continue its growth trajectory, reaching an estimated $507 billion. The sector is also expected to support around 8.3 million jobs. Projections for international visitor spending are set at $198 billion, with domestic visitor spending forecasted to exceed $224 billion, underlining the region's escalating appeal as a global tourism hub.
This optimistic outlook for Qatar and the broader Middle East underscores the pivotal role that travel and tourism play in fostering economic growth and employment, positioning the region as a compelling destination for international and domestic travelers alike.
