Professional Training Programme Empowers Over 200 Publishers With Strategic Insights On AI And Social Media
The Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has launched the "Professional Training Programme for Publishers." This event is part of the activities leading up to the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair and the 14th Sharjah Publishers Conference. In collaboration with NYU SPS Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts (PALA), it attracted over 200 publishers from 43 countries.
During the opening session, Joana Jamil, Strategic Partner Manager at Meta, discussed how publishers can use Meta's platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. She explained that these platforms help reach a global audience and boost book sales. With Instagram alone having over 2 billion monthly users, the potential reach is vast. However, she stressed that each platform serves different audiences, requiring tailored content strategies.

Chantal Restivo-Alessi from HarperCollins Publishers led a session on AI's role in publishing. She explored how AI can optimise business processes and enhance productivity. Her presentation covered AI's impact on content creation, marketing strategies, and sales techniques. This session provided insights into leveraging AI for better publishing outcomes.
The programme also featured a practical exercise using artificial intelligence in book marketing. Participants used the "ChatGPT" application to create book summaries. They worked in groups to develop cover summaries with character descriptions and key details. The exercise concluded with a display of effective inputs and outcomes, showcasing AI's practical applications.
The second session focused on TikTok's influence on book marketing. Led by Donia Abi Nassif from TikTok, it highlighted the "BookTok" community's impact on book recommendations and sales. With over 39 million posts dedicated to books, this subcommunity is growing annually by nearly 15%. The session offered strategies for engaging with creators to boost book visibility.
Mansour Al Hassani emphasised Sharjah’s commitment to cultural development through publishing. He stated that culture is vital for societal growth and supports the creative economy ecosystem. Al Hassani expressed hopes that this programme would inspire collaboration among publishers to contribute to sustainable development.
Empowering Publishers Globally
Andrea Chambers from NYU SPS PALA praised SBA’s efforts in supporting publishers. She noted that their annual collaboration offers regional publishers a chance to enhance skills and expand globally. Chambers highlighted that the training provides best practices while fostering a community of diverse voices.
