In a significant development at the 213th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Governing Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Meera Sultan Al Suwaidi, representing the Federal National Council (FNC) of the UAE, took a pivotal role. As the Rapporteur of the outcomes of the parliamentary meeting accompanying COP28, Al Suwaidi presented the final document, marking a crucial step in international efforts to combat climate change.
The parliamentary meeting, organized by the IPU and the FNC, coincided with the UAE's hosting of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28). It stood out as the most attended parliamentary gathering in the history of COP, with over 400 participants from more than 70 countries. This remarkable attendance underscores the global parliamentary commitment to driving forward the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Al Suwaidi emphasized that for the first time, this meeting was conducted within COP28's Green Zone, highlighting the critical role parliaments play in global climate action. The discussions focused on adaptation, climate finance, loss and damage, and parliamentary oversight. Special attention was given to small island developing states and the significant contributions of women and young parliamentarians to climate efforts.
The adopted final document from this meeting serves as a comprehensive guide for parliaments worldwide. It urges governments to enhance their nationally determined contributions and foster international cooperation to combat climate change effectively. The document also calls for increased support for adaptation measures, greater investment in renewable energy, and efforts to bridge the climate finance gap in developing nations.
Attended by prominent members of the UAE Parliamentary Group in the IPU, including Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi and Sarah Mohammed Falkinaz, this session marked a pivotal moment in global climate governance. It provided a clear roadmap for parliamentary action on climate change at both national and global levels, aiming for a sustainable future for all.
