Paris Conference Calls For Enhanced Support For Syria’s Political Transition And Security Efforts
An international conference on Syria took place in Paris, gathering representatives from 20 countries, including G7 nations, the European Union, the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. The meeting was chaired by French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, with President Emmanuel Macron participating in discussions.
The conference's joint statement emphasised supporting Syria's transitional government to meet the Syrian people's aspirations for freedom and dignity. It aimed to build a free, inclusive, united, sovereign, stable, and peaceful Syria integrated into its regional and global environment.

Participants stressed that the transition period must be Syrian-led and owned, aligning with Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015). They highlighted establishing state institutions and restructuring Syria's military and security apparatus to ensure the Syrian people's security.
The statement reaffirmed support for the National Dialogue Conference announced by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa on 30th January. This conference aims to include all sectors of Syrian society and members of the diaspora abroad.
Advancing transitional justice was underscored as crucial. Participants agreed on holding those responsible for past violations accountable. Preventing terrorist group resurgence in Syria was deemed vital, alongside warning against ongoing terrorist activities.
The call for ending hostilities and supporting efforts to unify Syrian territory through a negotiated political solution was made clear. The need to scale up humanitarian aid to Syria was also highlighted.
Reconstruction Efforts
Encouraging support for reconstruction efforts was a key point. The United Nations' central role in these efforts was reaffirmed. Ensuring the safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland was stressed as essential.
A long-term 'Syrian Transition Support' group establishment was proposed to maintain dialogue and strategic coordination among the international community. This group would assist Syrians in realising their legitimate aspirations.
Human Rights and Freedoms
Participants expressed backing for Syrian authorities' efforts to uphold human rights and freedoms for all Syrians. Ongoing cooperation is necessary to achieve lasting peace and stability in Syria and the broader region.
The facilitation of conditions necessary for refugees' voluntary return was emphasised. Supporting economic recovery is also crucial for ensuring a stable future for Syria.
