Oscar Triumph For 'Two Distant Strangers': A Tale Of Creativity And Resilience
The 8th edition of Xposure International Photography Festival, held in 2024, continued to captivate attendees on its third day with a series of enlightening sessions. Among the highlights was an exclusive conversation with Oscar-winning filmmakers Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe. Their session, ‘Best Day Ever: How We Won An Oscar,’ provided a rare glimpse into the making of their acclaimed film, Two Distant Strangers, and the profound journey towards Oscar glory.
During the session, Free and Roe delved into the creative and thematic intricacies of Two Distant Strangers. The film, which portrays a black man's repeated encounters with fatal police violence, was inspired by the global protests following George Floyd's murder. "The concept was akin to a modern-day Groundhog Day, focusing on a cycle of violence," Free explained. This project marked a significant shift from their initial plan to work on a romantic comedy, spurred by the societal upheaval during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The filmmakers shared their experiences of overcoming the financial and logistical challenges inherent in short film production, especially amidst a global lockdown. "Making a short film is fundamentally financially unviable... So if you have an idea in this space, you have to find people who are going to help fund it," Free noted. Roe added, "You have to have an immense amount of belief in the essence of the project. Plus resilience in the face of being told ‘no’ repeatedly."
Winning an Oscar was described as a life-changing event that validated their vision and underscored the power of storytelling. "It felt like a dream come true," Roe remarked. The filmmakers emphasized the importance of belief and resilience in achieving such a prestigious accolade.
Following their Oscar win, Free and Roe have ventured into new projects, including multiple scripted films and a documentary aired on HBO. They encouraged aspiring filmmakers to listen to the world and follow their hearts, highlighting the significant impact storytelling can have.
The festival also featured other notable sessions such as ‘Idea to Image,’ where filmmakers discussed the convergence of creativity and execution in filmmaking. Additionally, Glenn Roggeman’s keynote on ‘Development and Greening of the Film Industry in the Middle East’ shed light on how environmental sustainability is influencing cinema in the region.
The Xposure International Photography Festival continues to serve as a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences among creatives from around the world. Through sessions like these, it fosters a deeper understanding of the art and craft of filmmaking, while also highlighting important societal issues and innovative industry practices.
