Bright Future Ahead For Oman's Travel And Tourism Sector In 2024
The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) recently released its 2024 Economic Impact Research, painting a bright future for Oman's travel and tourism sector. This optimism is buoyed by strong governmental support and strategic initiatives aimed at propelling the sector beyond its previous achievements.
In 2023, the sector's contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Oman saw a significant increase of almost 35%, reaching a total of RO2.8bn. This growth trajectory is expected to continue, with projections indicating that the sector will contribute more than RO3.3bn to the GDP in 2024, representing 7.6% of the nation's economy. Additionally, the sector's employment numbers are on the rise, with a 15% increase bringing the total to 191,500 individuals, as reported by Muscat Daily.
The influx of international visitors in the previous year played a pivotal role in this economic boost, contributing RO1.1bn to the economy, a staggering 69% increase from 2022. Domestic tourism has also seen a rebound, with expenditures reaching RO1.4bn. Predictions for domestic visitor spending are optimistic, with expectations to surpass RO1.5bn, exceeding 2019 levels by just over 8%. While international spending is still trailing behind 2019 by RO142.3mn, it is anticipated to grow throughout 2024.
Looking ahead, the WTTC forecasts that by 2034, the annual GDP contribution of the travel and tourism sector will reach RO5.4bn, which will account for 9.8% of Oman's economy. Moreover, the sector is expected to employ more than 265,600 people, with one in every 13 residents working within this industry.
Oman has solidified its standing as a premier tourist destination in the Middle East, thanks to the government's strategic investment and support. These efforts have not only rejuvenated the economy but are also setting the foundation for further growth in international travel spending and the overall economic contribution of the sector.
Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC, highlighted the significance of the sector's growth, stating, "Oman's travel and tourism sector is on the cusp of a historic revival in 2024." Simpson's statement underscores the government's commitment to leveraging travel and tourism as a key driver of economic growth and job creation.
