Oman Initiates Workshops With ICC To Revamp Building Standards

May 2024 marks a significant stride towards enhancing building safety and construction standards in Oman, following a groundbreaking agreement between the International Code Council (ICC) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP). This collaboration has now moved forward with the initiation of a workshop series in Muscat, aimed at developing six comprehensive building codes by early 2026. These codes, anchored in the 2021 International Codes (I-Codes), are engineered to elevate standards across the nation, promoting best practices and ensuring the safety of its citizens.

The inaugural series of workshops convened key participants, including government officials, design professionals, and industry experts. Over three days, discussions delved into the project scope, findings from initial research, local construction practices, and regulatory frameworks. The aim was to identify gaps and forge strategic recommendations for Oman’s building code enhancements. Such collaborative efforts underscore the commitment to formulating codes that not only meet Oman's unique needs but also set a benchmark in construction safety and sustainability.

Oman Revamps Building Codes

The workshops serve as a crucial platform for integrating safety standards, sustainability, and technology in Oman's construction sector. By leveraging the 2021 I-Codes, Oman aims to position itself as a frontrunner in the field of construction safety. Dr. Hanan Al Jabri, H.E Advisor for Urban Planning at MoHUP, emphasized the workshop's importance, noting that the collaboration with ICC is instrumental in elevating the nation’s construction industry standards.

From the ICC’s perspective, Mr. Hamid Naderi, Senior Vice President of Product Development, highlighted the organization’s dedication to adapting the I-Codes to address Oman’s specific requirements. The engagement and input from local stakeholders during these workshops are crucial for the successful customization and implementation of the codes, aiming to improve resilience and safety standards within the region.

The partnership between ICC and MoHUP is a testament to their mutual commitment to enhancing building practices in Oman. The success of the Oman Building Code Stakeholder Workshop is a significant step towards realizing a safer, more sustainable construction landscape in Oman. Through this initiative, Oman not only aims to safeguard its citizens but also to establish new standards of excellence in the building industry.

As the series of workshops continue, the development of Oman-specific building codes will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in transforming the nation's construction standards. The collaborative effort between ICC, MoHUP, and local stakeholders reflects a shared vision for a safer and more sustainable future in Oman’s construction sector.
