NYUAD To Host Hackathon For Social Good, Focusing On Quantum Computing And AI

In a significant move towards harnessing technology for societal benefits, NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), in collaboration with Tamkeen, is set to host the 12th edition of the NYUAD Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World. Scheduled from 25th to 28th April, this international event stands out in the region for its focus on leveraging quantum computing (QC) and artificial intelligence (AI) to address challenges that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Hackathon will see teams of seven to ten students from around the world, predominantly from the Arab region, working under the guidance of two field experts. These mentors hail from prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, ETH Zürich, MIT, and Stanford, and include founders of successful startups and technology professionals from leading companies like Google, Meta, and IBM. The event aims to foster innovative applications that contribute positively to society.

NYUAD Affiliated Professor Sana Odeh, the founder and organizer of the event, emphasized the Hackathon's role in empowering students with advanced quantum hardware skills. She highlighted the invaluable networking opportunities provided through partnerships and expert participation, which have historically opened doors to international collaborations, startup launches, and further academic research in quantum computing.

Andrew Jackson, Chief AI Officer at Core42, underscored their commitment to leveraging AI's potential not just within the UAE but globally. He stressed the importance of nurturing a new generation of innovators to ensure technology's lasting benefits to societies worldwide.

The Hackathon will culminate on 28th April with final presentations and an award ceremony open to the public. Keynote speeches will be delivered by Christian Weedbrook, Founder and CEO of Xanadu, and Urbasi Sinha, Professor at the Raman Research Institute (RRI).

Supported by top global experts in Quantum Computing from both industry and academia, the NYUAD Hackathon has become a pivotal event for contributing to social good both in the Arab world and globally. With over 1,000 participants from more than 50 countries in its history, it has been instrumental in launching careers through scholarships, job opportunities, and startup ventures. Last year's winners had the unique chance to present their project at the GESDA Summit in Geneva.

This year's edition promises to continue this legacy of innovation and societal contribution through technology. With its elite assembly of mentors and a focus on practical solutions for global challenges, the NYUAD Hackathon for Social Good in the Arab World is poised to inspire yet another generation of students towards making a positive impact on society.
