Region-Specific Footwear Design Emphasised By Dr. Aboobaker Sayed At SINMAC Conference
Dr. Aboobaker Sayed, a podiatrist based in Abu Dhabi, has conducted research suggesting the need for shoe designs tailored to the Gulf region's residents. His study, presented at the SINMAC Conference, highlights that Emirati foot shapes differ from Western models used by most footwear manufacturers today. This mismatch often results in discomfort and potential long-term injuries due to ill-fitting shoes.
The research underscores the importance of proper footwear for military, police, and national-service personnel who spend extended periods on their feet. Dr. Sayed noted that incorrect shoe fit can negatively affect comfort and performance during training and field activities. He emphasised that well-designed shoes are crucial not only for comfort but also for injury prevention and enhanced performance.

Dr. Sayed explained, "Footwear directly affects stability, comfort, and safety." He added that shoes designed with regional foot shapes in mind could prevent issues like calluses, bunions, poor posture, and even ulcers in diabetic patients. The current reliance on Western sizing models often leads to these problems as they do not accommodate broader forefeet common among local residents.
Building on this initial research phase, Dr. Sayed plans to develop a 3D "Emirati Foot Atlas." This database will aid in creating GCC-specific shoe lasts and designs suitable for various needs including military and diabetic footwear. The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s vision to foster innovation in healthcare and applied science.
The project has garnered interest from academic institutions like Khalifa University and the Department of Health (DOH) Abu Dhabi. They are exploring potential collaborations to advance this research further. A spokesperson from SINMAC Conference expressed pride in supporting such innovative work that enhances quality of life through locally relevant science.
Community Support and Vision
A representative from SEHA Ambulatory Services highlighted how practical clinical insights can lead to significant public health improvements. They noted that Dr. Sayed’s research exemplifies how local scientific advancements can contribute to everyday comfort and well-being.
Dr. Sayed concluded by stating that with appropriate partnerships, the UAE could lead regional efforts in designing footwear that truly fits its people. This would improve comfort levels, reduce injury risks, and support long-term health outcomes across the community.
