NDMA Warns Of Severe Weather Conditions In Islamabad And Punjab Regions Today

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about severe weather expected in Punjab and Islamabad. This alert highlights the potential for heavy rain, thunderstorms, windstorms, and isolated hailstorms due to a westerly disturbance. The Punjab cabinet committee on disaster management has approved several initiatives to enhance climate resilience in Cholistan.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) of the NDMA, the anticipated weather conditions could lead to various hazards. Heavy rain and strong winds might cause weak trees to fall and result in temporary power outages. Additionally, windstorms and hail could damage poorly constructed buildings, rooftops, vehicles, and power infrastructure.

Severe Weather Warning for Islamabad and Punjab

The NDMA has advised everyone, including tourists, to stay informed about weather and road conditions. They recommend avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain and adhering to local safety instructions, especially in areas prone to landslides. The authority is actively monitoring the situation in real-time.

Coordination with provincial and district disaster management authorities is ongoing to ensure a prompt response and public safety. This collaboration aims to mitigate risks associated with the severe weather forecasted for the region.

In a separate development, the Punjab cabinet committee on disaster management has approved several schemes aimed at combating climate impacts. These include installing water filtration plants in Cholistan to improve water quality and availability for residents.

The meeting also sanctioned four projects worth Rs550 million. These projects focus on preventing river erosion and strengthening infrastructure like the Walewala Dam on the Sutlej River in Kasur district. Such measures are crucial for protecting communities from potential flooding.

Infrastructure Strengthening Efforts

Approval was granted for constructing and reinforcing a protective dam in Layyah to prevent river erosion. Additionally, a scheme was approved to address erosion along the Chenab River from Bela Sarban to Head Trimo in Jhang district. These efforts aim to safeguard agricultural land and local communities from riverbank erosion.

The initiatives undertaken by both NDMA and Punjab's disaster management committee reflect a proactive approach towards mitigating climate-related challenges. By enhancing infrastructure resilience and ensuring public safety measures are in place, authorities aim to minimise risks associated with extreme weather events.
