Nature Guardians Majlis Aligns UAE's Vision To Integrate Nature Into National Development Strategy
The UAE is reinforcing its global environmental leadership by promoting nature-based solutions. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) hosted the second Nature Guardians Majlis – Government Sector Council. This event, part of preparations for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025 in Abu Dhabi, gathered senior officials from various environmental and governmental bodies to discuss sustainability.
Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, emphasised that the Majlis marks a new phase of integrated national action. She stated, "Our heritage underpins our vision to establish natural capital as the most valuable asset in our economy." This highlights the UAE's commitment to leveraging nature-based solutions for innovation in food and water security, green economic transition, sustainable cities, and improved quality of life.

The discussions at the Majlis were divided into three strategic rounds. The first round assessed the current situation and anticipated future needs. It identified necessary policy shifts and government mechanisms to accelerate progress while addressing main obstacles. The second round highlighted practical tools like nature-based solutions to tackle climate challenges and enhance resilience.
The final round focused on shaping ambitious national commitments for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025. It also aimed to identify initiatives and partnerships to ensure these commitments lead to a sustainable legacy. These discussions resulted in outcomes reinforcing the UAE’s leadership in sustainability and its role in shaping a nature-positive future.
Attendees included Dr. Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri from the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, Ali Ahmed Ali Abughazayain from Sharjah Fish Resources Authority, Assilah Abdullah Ali Maala Al-Hashimi from Fujairah Environment Authority, and Ahmed Ismail Al Hashemi from the Terrestrial and Marine Biodiversity Sector at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. Representatives from Ajman Municipality, Al Ain Zoo, Dibba Municipality, and other agencies involved in environmental protection also participated.
Dr. Amna Al Dahak stressed that empowering youth and communities is essential for achieving lasting change. She noted that policies should be designed with communities rather than for them: "Empowering our youth, community members, and local institutions is not optional; it is the only way to turn our ambitions into a lasting legacy."
Outcomes of the Majlis
The outcomes focused on establishing a legislative framework for a nature-positive economy, integrating nature into development projects, activating participatory governance, using innovation for conservation, and showcasing Emirati models globally. The Majlis concluded with consensus on highlighting UAE’s achievements as a unique model where conservation aligns with economic growth.
As preparations continue for the IUCN World Conservation Congress 2025, these outcomes underscore UAE's determination to lead with practical solutions and inclusive engagement. By positioning natural capital at policymaking's core and showcasing governance rooted in partnership and innovation, UAE advances a holistic vision where sustainability drives prosperity.
