National Winter Traffic Safety Campaign At Petrol Stations Aims To Save Lives And Protect Property
The Joint Committee for Security and Safety has launched the National Winter Traffic Safety Campaign to reduce refuelling incidents at petrol stations and protect motorists during the colder season. The initiative focuses on unsafe behaviour while refuelling and seeks to strengthen compliance with station rules across the country.
The campaign begins on 22nd December and runs for one month, targeting drivers who refuel frequently during winter, including users of desert motorcycles and off-road vehicles. It aims to raise awareness about safe refuelling habits that protect lives and limit damage to vehicles, facilities and surrounding property.

The Joint Committee for Security and Safety oversees the campaign under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. Partners include the General Command of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company for Distribution (ADNOC Distribution), Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat), and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), which coordinate implementation at service stations.
Awareness content is being shared through digital channels, social media and guidance screens at partner petrol stations and along federal roads. Messages highlight practical steps for motorists and riders to prevent incidents during refuelling and reinforce a wider culture of safety at fuel facilities.
Key safety message
---
Switch off vehicle and motorcycle engines before refuelling.
Avoid sitting on motorcycles during refuelling operations.
Ensure vehicles and motorcycles are firmly parked and stable.
Follow all instructions and warning signs displayed at petrol stations.
Do not use mobile phones while refuelling at any time.
Key messages stress that refuelling must only begin once engines are turned off, with vehicles and motorcycles correctly positioned at the pump. Motorists are urged to respect all posted guidance within the station and to avoid distractions, especially mobile phone use, during refuelling operations at any location.
Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said the campaign shows the commitment of the authorities to advance safety standards at petrol stations through focused awareness efforts. "We will continue to work with our partners from government entities and national companies to intensify awareness initiatives and unify efforts aimed at protecting lives, reducing risks, and building a safer and more sustainable environment," he added.
The National Winter Traffic Safety Campaign is designed to align the efforts of government bodies and fuel distributors around a single safety message. By concentrating on clear rules for behaviour at petrol stations and consistent communication across platforms, the authorities aim to limit winter refuelling accidents and support safer use of the country’s fuel network.
