National Multiple Sclerosis Society Partners With UAE Universities For Inclusive Design Innovation
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) has partnered with six prominent universities in the UAE to launch the Universal Design for Inclusion Program. This initiative aims to incorporate accessibility-focused education into higher learning, empowering students to develop inclusive solutions. The programme highlights the challenges faced by People of Determination, especially those with chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis.
Students from Abu Dhabi University, University of Sharjah, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI), Khalifa University, Al Ain University, and six Higher Colleges of Technology campuses are participating. The programme spans 11 campuses and involves over 500 students and 45 faculty members. It includes more than 15 immersive workshops designed to provide practical learning experiences.

Participants began their journey with Empathy Workshops, which offered firsthand insights into living with chronic conditions. These workshops were followed by mentorship sessions led by experts. Students were introduced to real-world design challenges and encouraged to develop innovative solutions.
Ahmed Taleb Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Foundation and Vice Chair of NMSS, emphasised the programme's impact on youth empowerment. He stated, "This initiative is about more than awareness; it’s about action. By involving students directly in the creation of solutions, we are nurturing a generation that not only understands accessibility but champions it."
Sara Belhaif Al Nuaimi, CEO of Sheraa, expressed support for the initiative. She said, "We’re proud to help turn inclusive ideas into scalable ventures. This programme offers students valuable insight into real-world challenges and inspires practical solutions for all."
Aligning With National Strategies
The programme aligns with the UAE’s national inclusion strategy and Year of Community theme, Hand in Hand. It unites educators, industry leaders, and communities to promote inclusive innovation across various sectors.
Students will present their final projects to a panel of experts. The top three teams will join the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa) youth incubation platform, Startup Dojo. This opportunity allows them to further develop their prototypes into viable solutions.
