National Human Rights Institution Participates As Observer At Asia Pacific Forum In Thailand
The National Human Rights Institution, led by Chairperson Maqsoud Kruse, attended the 29th annual Asia Pacific Forum (APF) meeting in Bangkok from 24th to 25th September. This biennial event gathered representatives from national human rights institutions, governments, civil society, and United Nations agencies across the Asia Pacific region.
The conference commenced with discussions on pressing human rights issues such as regional conflicts, climate change, and diminishing civil space. Emphasis was placed on collaboration between national institutions and governments to bolster human rights protection amid these challenges. The historical achievements since adopting the Paris Principles were also reviewed.

The participation of the National Human Rights Institution as an "observer" aimed to promote international human rights standards and ensure equality and justice in society. This involvement underscores its dedication to applying the Paris Principles and maintaining a balance between rights, freedoms, and adherence to the rule of law.
Maqsoud Kruse delivered a presentation highlighting recent developments within the institution. He covered strategic directives concerning labour rights, women's and children's rights, rights of people of determination, and health and mental health rights. Additionally, he discussed cooperation with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and the Asia Pacific Forum.
Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Secretary-General of the institution, participated in a special session for executive leaders and secretaries-general of national human rights institutions. This session focused on sharing experiences related to institutional establishment and capacity-building at all organisational levels.
The delegation comprised members from both the Board of Trustees and the General Secretariat. Notable members included Ameera Al Seraidi, Dr. Zayed Al Shamsi, Dr. Abdulaziz Al Noman, Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Fajr Al-Haidan, Head of Agreements and Reports Section, and Abdulaziz Al-Obthani, Head of International and Regional Organisations Section.
The conference also explored how national human rights institutions contribute to promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and safeguarding fundamental freedoms. These discussions highlighted their pivotal roles in advancing human rights globally.
