NAMA Launches Nthanda Women Mushrooms Project To Empower 900 Women In Malawi

NAMA Women Advancement has introduced the "Nthanda Women Mushrooms Project" in Lilongwe, Malawi. This initiative, spanning from 2025 to 2028, aims to equip 900 women with skills in mushroom farming. The project seeks to uplift women's economic and social status while supporting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is a collaborative effort with Zayane Creations Trust.

The project will establish 45 women-led agricultural enterprises over three years, with each enterprise consisting of 20 women. Annually, 15 enterprises will be formed. This initiative is expected to indirectly benefit around 4,500 people, considering an average household size of five. Additionally, five rural business centres will be created to boost local economies.

NAMA Empowers Women with Mushroom Project in Malawi

By focusing on enhancing women's agricultural products and market connections, the project promotes sustainable practices. Comprehensive training in business planning, financial management, marketing, and market research is included. This approach directly addresses the challenges faced by rural women in Malawi, where agriculture supports 84 percent of the population and over half live in poverty.

Women in these communities often face limited decision-making power and restricted access to education and economic opportunities. Mariam Al Hammadi, Director-General of NAMA, highlighted that this initiative aligns with Sharjah’s vision and directives of H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi to empower women globally.

"Our strategy to improve the lives of women in disadvantaged communities focuses on sustainable development and investing in local potential," said Al Hammadi. She emphasized that long-term commitment yields more lasting impact than short-term solutions. The project aims to create environments where women can tackle challenges using their skills and knowledge.

The initiative is designed for immediate and enduring results by empowering female-led enterprises and markets. Key outcomes include strengthening women's bargaining power in marketplaces, increasing household income through better production and market access, and promoting environmental sustainability by using drought-resilient irrigation for mushroom cultivation.

Innovative Approaches for Economic Growth

The project also supports new agricultural value chains through innovations in processing and marketing. It generates local employment opportunities via greenhouse construction and expanding rural growth centres. The partnership with Zayane Creations Trust aligns with NAMA’s goal of enhancing women's roles globally.

This collaboration focuses on fostering economic empowerment, boosting women's influence within families, and providing comprehensive support for profitable agribusinesses. By integrating women into formal market systems, the project ensures continuous income generation and future enterprise growth.

A Model for Sustainable Development

NAMA's commitment to sustainable community development is evident through targeted rural investments like this one. Designed as a scalable model, its success in Lilongwe will serve as a blueprint for similar initiatives elsewhere. This reflects NAMA’s dedication to creating transformative opportunities for women worldwide.
