Muslim Council Of Elders To Co-Host Global Summit Of Religious Leaders Addressing Climate Change

The Caucasus Muslims' Board (CMB), in collaboration with the Muslim Council of Elders and other key organisations, is hosting a significant event in Baku. The Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate will take place on November 5-6. This summit, held under the patronage of President Ilham Aliyev, is part of Azerbaijan's preparations for COP29.

Over 300 participants are expected, including government officials, UN representatives, international organisation leaders, religious figures, scholars, and environmental experts. The theme "World Religions for a Green Planet" underscores the pivotal role religions play in combating climate change. It aims to unite religious leaders against wars and environmental harm while promoting peaceful resolutions.

Global Summit of Religious Leaders for Climate Action

Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, emphasised the council's dedication to fostering interfaith dialogue for better understanding and sustainability. He praised Azerbaijan's leadership under President Aliyev for advancing intercultural dialogue. Abdelsalam highlighted that religious leaders can significantly contribute to addressing global challenges like climate change.

He also noted Azerbaijan's declaration of 2024 as the 'Year of Solidarity for a Green World.' This initiative aligns with the Call of Conscience: The Abu Dhabi Joint Statement for Climate from last year's Global Faith Leaders Summit in Abu Dhabi. Abdelsalam expressed hope that this summit would further raise global awareness about climate issues.

His Virtue Sheikh ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims' Board and spiritual leader in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, highlighted the urgency of current environmental challenges. He expressed optimism that this summit would build on the success of last year's event in Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh-ul-Islam commended the efforts of the Muslim Council of Elders under Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb's leadership. He acknowledged their work in uniting faith and science to protect our planet. The summit aims to inspire collective action towards a sustainable future.

This gathering represents a crucial step towards fostering global cooperation among religious communities to address pressing environmental issues. By bringing together diverse voices, it seeks to promote harmony with nature and encourage collaborative efforts against climate change.
