Moroccan Minister Of Youth And Culture Explores Cultural Heritage At SIBF 2024
Dr. Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, the Moroccan Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, attended the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2024). He was welcomed by Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of the Sharjah Book Authority, and Ahmed Tazi, Morocco's Ambassador to the UAE. This visit coincided with Morocco being celebrated as the Guest of Honour at the 43rd edition of the fair.
During his visit, Dr. Bensaid explored various aspects of the book fair alongside Al Ameri. They toured the Moroccan pavilion, which featured a cultural programme including seminars and discussions led by renowned Moroccan philosophers and authors. The minister also visited 25 Moroccan publishers displaying over 4,000 titles in literature, philosophy, and arts.

The tour included viewing rare manuscripts that showcased Morocco’s rich heritage in fields like astronomy and geography. Among these were significant works by Moroccan scholars and the historic Idrisi Map. Additionally, centuries-old copies of the Holy Quran and archaeological artefacts were displayed, highlighting Morocco's cultural legacy.
Dr. Bensaid commented on SIBF's importance as a global event in publishing that promotes reading and supports the knowledge economy. He noted that Morocco's role as Guest of Honour is a unique chance to display its culture through special events and exhibits at the Moroccan pavilion.
The minister described SIBF as an essential platform for Moroccan publishers to showcase their latest works and introduce Moroccan culture to visitors from the UAE and beyond. He highlighted Sharjah's global prominence in publishing and saw Morocco’s participation as an opportunity to attract investment in publishing while strengthening cultural ties with Sharjah.
Expressing interest in expanding partnerships, particularly in copyright exchange and intellectual property protection, Dr. Bensaid emphasised the high demand for Moroccan literature across Arab countries and globally. He expressed eagerness to explore joint projects with Sharjah to further develop cultural sectors.
Strengthening Cultural Ties
Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri noted that Dr. Bensaid’s visit underscores Morocco’s commitment to cultural affairs and presenting its heritage globally. Celebrating Morocco as Guest of Honour highlights its role as a cultural bridge between East and West, offering a platform to share its diverse achievements with a global audience.
Al Ameri also remarked on the significant interest in the Moroccan pavilion, with high attendance reflecting appreciation for Morocco’s intellectual contributions from both UAE residents and international visitors. The Guest of Honour agenda fosters unique opportunities for cultural exchange and networking with diverse audiences.
