MOCCAE Shares Key Insights On Food Security And Sustainability At International Government Communication Forum

The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) recently concluded its participation in the International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) at Sharjah Expo Centre. The event, held on 10–11 September, highlighted the UAE's strategic vision for food security and sustainable development. MOCCAE officials emphasised youth empowerment, advanced technology adoption, and strong community communication as foundations for a sustainable future.

This year's forum featured significant international engagement with 237 speakers delivering over 110 activities across five key tracks: Food Security, Public Health, Education, Environmental Sustainability, and Green Economy. These sessions underscored national initiatives that position the UAE as a leader in balancing economic growth with environmental protection.

MOCCAE Discusses Food Security at IGCF

Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hammadi, Assistant Undersecretary for the Food Diversity Sector at MOCCAE, spoke about transforming climate challenges into opportunities. He highlighted modern agricultural technologies like vertical farming that reduce water usage by over 90% while mitigating high temperatures. "The UAE is now home to some of the world’s largest and most advanced vertical farms," he stated.

Al Hammadi stressed the Ministry's focus on empowering young people through training and leadership initiatives. Key programmes include 'Plant the Emirates', which supports Emirati farmers and promotes home gardening. Additionally, initiatives like 'Mustadeem' prepare future agriculture leaders in collaboration with partners.

Hiba Obaid Al Shehhi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Biodiversity and Aquatic Life Sector at MOCCAE, outlined a federal vision for marine resource management. This vision extends beyond protection to sustainability and prosperity. The National Biodiversity Strategy 2031 aims to expand marine protected zones significantly.

Al Shehhi detailed pioneering programmes such as planting 100 million mangroves by 2030 and launching the region's largest coral reef rehabilitation project. She emphasised effective community communication to build genuine partnerships rather than just raising awareness.

Sustainable Fisheries Framework

Dr. Ibrahim Abdulla Al Jamali, Director of Fisheries Department at MOCCAE, discussed the National Framework Statement for Sustainable Fisheries 2019-2030. This framework aims to create an environmentally sustainable fishing sector through regulated fishing tools and seasons while protecting ecosystems like mangroves and coral reefs.

Dr. Al Jamali highlighted that decisions are based on science and knowledge, supported by comprehensive fishery surveys and socio-economic studies of fishermen. These efforts aim to empower fishermen through direct support programmes and port development.

Communication Strategies

Hajar Bakhit Al Ketbi, Director of Government Communication at MOCCAE, explained the Ministry’s communication philosophy. It focuses on connecting with people's beliefs rather than just providing information. The approach draws inspiration from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's legacy linking agriculture to civilisation.

Al Ketbi cited initiatives like the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative (ne’ma), which resonates with cultural values of preserving blessings. This transforms awareness campaigns into national dialogues where individuals feel responsible as partners in achieving the Nation’s vision.

The Ministry's participation in IGCF underscores its commitment to using community dialogue and innovative communication channels to realise a sustainable future for the UAE. Encouraging local food consumption supports both economic growth and national identity.
