Japan's Mitsui To Launch Ammonia Plant In UAE By 2027 For Cleaner Energy

Mitsui has partnered with TA'ZIZ (owned by ADNOC), Fertiglobe, and South Korea's GS Energy Corporation to begin construction of an ammonia production facility in Al Ruwais, UAE, according to Reuters report.

The project has secured financing through a loan agreement between Mitsui and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The plant is expected to produce 1 million tons of ammonia per year with lower CO2 emissions compared to conventional ammonia, starting from 2027.

To reduce CO2 emissions, the plant will have additional facilities installed to capture and store CO2 emitted during the manufacturing process. The aim is to commence production of clean ammonia by 2030. Mitsui will offtake a certain volume of the clean ammonia produced at the plant for supplying Japan and other Asian markets, contributing to decarbonization efforts in various industries.

Mitsui has been handling ammonia for about 50 years and remains the largest importer to Japan. Mitsui and Adnoc have also been jointly developing and managing liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants in the UAE since the 1970s.

By leveraging cross-industry expertise and partnerships from existing businesses, Mitsui aims to establish a clean ammonia supply chain that addresses decarbonization needs across different countries and regions.

In its Medium-term Management Plan 2026, Mitsui identified Global Energy Transition as a Key Strategic Initiative, positioning clean ammonia as a promising option for next-generation fuels. Through this business initiative, Mitsui strives to contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society.
