MBZUAI Ushers In Largest And Most Diverse Cohort Enhancing Abu Dhabi’s AI Landscape
The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) recently celebrated its largest and most diverse intake of students at a series of on-campus orientation events. This milestone highlights the growing interest in graduate studies in artificial intelligence (AI) specialisations at MBZUAI.
MBZUAI received over 4800 applications, with an admission rate of just 5 percent, making academic seats highly competitive. The latest cohort includes 209 students, featuring the university’s first-ever computer science (CS) and robotics cohorts. These new additions follow the establishment of two new departments and four associated graduate programs last year.

Professor Timothy Baldwin, MBZUAI’s Provost, remarked, "This growth is a true testament to the university’s position as a leading institution in the AI landscape worldwide and our dedication to using AI for good to address real-world problems and have a positive impact on society and industry." He emphasised that the university’s reputation for diversity, inclusion, research capabilities, and compulsory internships attracts international students and faculty.
The Undergraduate Research Internship Program (UGRIP) has been particularly successful. In 2023 and 2024, 79 international undergraduate students visited the Masdar City Campus for four weeks. Notably, over half of UGRIP’s inaugural participants applied and received offers to join MBZUAI this year.
The university continues to attract top-tier students globally. Among the new intake are 39 students from the world’s top 100 CS universities, including Cornell University, Tsinghua University, University of California San Diego, University of Edinburgh, and University College London.
The Fall 2024 cohort represents 36 countries. It includes 44 Emiratis, with 147 pursuing master’s degrees and 62 working towards Ph.D. degrees in CS, computer vision (CV), machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and robotics. The student body now totals 381 students from 49 countries, with a gender ratio of 30 percent female to 70 percent male.
Expanding Academic Departments
To further enhance its offerings, MBZUAI is establishing three new departments dedicated to human-computer interaction (HCI), statistics and data science, and computational biology. These additions aim to develop interdisciplinary curriculum and research projects further.
MBZUAI continues to support the UAE’s ambitious innovation goals by providing a diverse pipeline of advanced talent for local industries and application markets. The university's efforts in high-impact research have also contributed to climbing world rankings.
"We also continued to climb the world rankings thanks to our ever-increasing high-impact research output from students, researchers, and faculty," said Professor Baldwin. "We have first- and second-year students publishing at top AI venues across the globe."
MBZUAI's commitment to nurturing future AI specialists is evident through its impressive student-faculty ratio of 5:1. This environment fosters significant contributions from both students and faculty in advancing AI innovation.
The university's dedication to diversity is reflected in its student demographics. The current student body includes representatives from various nationalities, ensuring a rich cultural exchange that enhances learning experiences.
In summary, MBZUAI's recent achievements underscore its role as a premier institution for AI education and research. The university remains committed to addressing real-world challenges through innovative solutions while supporting the UAE's vision for technological advancement.
