MBRSC Successfully Conducts New Tests On Rashid Rover 2 With Firefly Aerospace For Lunar Mission

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) has successfully completed a new series of tests on the Rashid Rover 2 in the USA. These tests were conducted in collaboration with Firefly Aerospace as part of preparations for the Emirates Lunar Mission. The mission aims to launch to the Moon's far side aboard Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 2 in 2026.

The testing phase included thorough checks on electrical, software, and mechanical interfaces with Firefly’s Blue Ghost lander. Wireless performance between the rover and the lander was also assessed. Engineers from both MBRSC and Firefly Aerospace worked together on deployment and drive-off trials. These trials are crucial to ensure the successful release of Rashid Rover 2 onto the lunar surface under various conditions.

MBRSC Tests Rashid Rover 2 with Firefly Aerospace

Dr. Hamad AlMarzooqi, Project Manager for the Emirates Lunar Mission at MBRSC, stated, "These latest tests mark an important milestone to ensure a seamless integration between the rover and the lander systems. Our joint efforts with Firefly Aerospace are guided by a shared focus on precision and innovation, ensuring the mission’s scientific and technical goals are achieved with the highest standards of reliability."

The Rashid Rover 2 will be part of Blue Ghost Mission 2 in 2026, joining payloads from Australia, NASA, and the European Space Agency (ESA). This mission follows Firefly's first successful commercial Moon landing with Blue Ghost Mission 1 in March 2025. The rover will be equipped with multiple cameras and scientific probes to study various lunar aspects.

Once on the Moon, Rashid Rover 2 will explore its plasma environment, geology, and thermal conditions. It will also examine lunar soil properties, surface structure temperatures, and the photoelectron sheath. These studies aim to provide valuable insights for future resource utilisation on-site and further deep space exploration.

Funding and Future Prospects

The Emirates Lunar Mission receives funding from the ICT Fund of the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority. This fund supports research and development within the UAE's ICT sector. The collaboration with Firefly Aerospace highlights an international effort to advance space exploration.

Farah Zuberi, Director of Spacecraft Mission Management at Firefly Aerospace, expressed pride in collaborating with MBRSC: "Firefly is proud to onboard the MBRSC Rashid Rover 2 on Blue Ghost Mission 2, which has evolved into an international mission representing countries across the globe. Now that the rover has been successfully delivered and tested in our cleanroom, we’re one step closer to deploying the rover on the lunar surface and unlocking new insights on the far side of the Moon."
