Mansoor Bin Mohammed Inaugurates 38th World Congress Of Sports Medicine In Dubai To Enhance Athlete Health

The 38th International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) World Congress of Sports Medicine commenced at the Dubai World Trade Centre. H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, inaugurated the event. The Congress will run until 27th October and is organised under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Second Deputy Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikh Mansoor highlighted the UAE's capability to host significant sports science events, reflecting global trust in the nation's organisational excellence. He praised the Scientific Committee for selecting crucial topics that have advanced sports medicine globally. "We are pleased with the exceptional level of participation at the Congress sessions," he stated, acknowledging the legacy of the International Federation of Sports Medicine since its inception in 1928.

The Congress has attracted delegations from 118 national associations and committees within FIMS, including sports medicine specialists worldwide. Dr. Fabio Pigozzi, President of FIMS, emphasised sports medicine's growing role in both recreational and competitive sports. "Our goal is to unite around a shared vision of promoting health," he said, focusing on disease prevention through physical activity and supporting athletes' recovery post-injury.

Dr. Hashel Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Sports Medicine Committee at UAE NOC, delivered a keynote address highlighting UAE leadership's commitment to advancing sports medicine as part of the National Sports Strategy 2031. He noted that hosting this Congress reflects international confidence in UAE's organisational capabilities.

The opening day featured a panel discussion titled ‘The Future of Sports Medicine and Sciences in the GCC’, moderated by Dr. Abdulla Al Rahoomi and Dr. Murat Dalkilinc. Panellists included experts from Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman. Additionally, Dr. Willem Van Mechelen from the Netherlands delivered a lecture on ‘The Effects of Physical Inactivity: Self-Regulation and Self-Responsibility’.

Two specialised workshops were conducted on day one: ‘New Trends in Sports Injury Rehabilitation and Imaging in Athletes’ and ‘Caring for Athletes with Special Needs in the Paralympic Games’. These sessions provided insights into innovative rehabilitation techniques and care strategies for athletes with special needs.

Exhibition Highlights

During his visit to the exhibition accompanying the Congress, Sheikh Mansoor was briefed on cutting-edge advancements in sports medicine by medical institutions and private entities. These innovations aim to enhance athlete recovery times using high-tech devices that provide precise data on physical performance and predict potential health risks.

The exhibition showcased practical models and equipment crucial for managing sports injuries from prevention to treatment stages. These technologies ensure athletes are ready to safely resume sporting activities by offering detailed insights into their physical and mental performance.

Diverse Sessions Throughout

The Congress features 16 sessions with 130 speakers, six workshops, 304 research papers, and participation from over 30 supporting entities representing more than 70 countries. Sessions cover various topics such as training loads, recovery techniques, technology application in sports, and a special focus on reducing chronic disease risks through physical activity promotion.

This four-day event brings together elite practitioners from fields like orthopaedic surgery, physiotherapy, rehabilitation, nutrition, psychology, and biomechanics to discuss athlete health enhancement strategies. The programme aims to explore ways to improve athletes' overall well-being while ensuring their safety during competitions.

The inclusion of Global Alliance Day for promoting physical activity underscores NOC's dedication not only to athlete well-being but also to community health promotion through increased physical activity awareness.
