Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup 2026: Record Participation Across 18 Countries And Eight Age Groups

The Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup completed its seventh edition with record participation, as more than 3,500 boys and girls from regional and international academies played across three days at Zayed Sports City. Over 244 teams from 18 countries, including Al Jazira, Baniyas, Al Wahda, Al Ain, Melbourne City and Manchester City, competed in what is described as the region’s largest annual youth football tournament.

The schedule featured five age groups for boys and three for girls, drawing around 8,000 spectators for a busy weekend of fixtures. Teams were split across eight age categories, and the event hosted both professional clubs and grassroots sides. Organisers highlighted the breadth of participation, reflecting growing interest in structured youth football across the Gulf and wider markets.

To handle rising demand from international entrants, the Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup expanded to three days for the first time. Across the extended programme, 1,435 matches were played and 2,562 goals were scored. This volume underlined how tightly packed the schedule had become, with back-to-back games across multiple pitches throughout the tournament window.

The latest edition also saw a clear rise in girls’ participation. A total of 44 girls’ teams took part across three age groups, reflecting steady development of the women’s game in the UAE, the wider Middle East region, and globally. The organisers positioned this increase as an indicator of changing attitudes towards female participation in structured youth sport.

On the competitive side, eight Cup competition winners entered a draw for a trip connected to the City Football Group. The winning team will travel to one of the group’s clubs, where players will train with coaches and watch a first-team in action. This element added an international development opportunity on top of the on-pitch experience in Abu Dhabi.

Boys’ U16s champions Al Seeb were drawn as the lucky winners and will now prepare their visit. The side from Oman repeated last year’s success in the same age category, when the team also prevailed and secured a trip to Manchester. The repeated win underlined the consistency of the squad’s performances across back-to-back tournaments.

The Plate competitions also delivered development-focused rewards. Following a separate draw, U14 Girls Plate winners Resistencia FC, from Singapore, will receive a three-day football clinic delivered by City Football Schools coaches. The clinic is expected to provide structured training sessions, adding a technical learning dimension to the group’s experience beyond the matches themselves.

Nedum Onuoha, former Manchester City defender and Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup Ambassador, said, "Tournaments like the Abu Dhabi Cup play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of footballers, providing young players with valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and test themselves in a competitive environment."

Reflecting on the broader impact, Simon Hewitt, Head of Football Operations MENA, City Football Group and Tournament Director of the Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup, said, "The Manchester City Abu Dhabi Cup 2026 once again illustrated how football unites people from all over the world. The challenge is now to evolve even further for 2027 - and that process starts now." The comments pointed to continuity and further expansion planning.
