Liwa Date Festival 2023 To Celebrate UAE’s Agricultural Heritage Under Sheikh Mansour’s Patronage
The 21st Liwa Date Festival, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will occur from 14th to 27th July in Liwa City, Al Dhafra Region. Organised by the Abu Dhabi Heritage Authority, this event celebrates the UAE's rich cultural and agricultural traditions. The festival coincides with the annual date harvest, highlighting palm trees' significance in Emirati culture.
This year's festival features 24 competitions, including 12 date "mazayna" contests. Categories include Dabbas, Khalas, Fard, Khenaizi, Buma’an, Shishi, Zamli, and more. The total prize value exceeds AED8.735 million. For Dabbas and Khalas categories, there are 25 prizes each with a total of AED446,000 per competition. First-place winners receive AED100,000.
The festival also includes seven fruit competitions for lemons, mangoes, figs, and a "Local Fruits Basket" contest. In the Mango Competition's local and mixed varieties subcategories, ten prizes are offered with a combined prize pool of AED234,000. The Lemon and Fig Competitions have ten prizes each valued at AED117,000 per category.
Three "Model Farm" contests cover Western and Eastern Mahadir farms and Al Dhafra cities. Each category offers a prize pool of AED750,000. Winners receive AED300,000 for first place. Additionally, the Most Beautiful Palm Frond Basket Competition has ten prizes to revive traditional crafts using natural materials.
The Palm Trunk Creativity Competition encourages recycling palm trunks into art with ten prizes available. The Largest Bunch of Dates Competition offers a prize pool of AED234,000 among 15 winners. First place receives AED50,000.
Cultural Events and Community Engagement
Beyond competitions, the festival hosts heritage events and cultural initiatives celebrating the date palm's legacy as a symbol of UAE heritage. It fosters family ties and community spirit through daily activities like quizzes with prizes and live performances.
The festival supports local communities through its traditional market featuring fresh dates and products. Stalls include mobile cafés and plant nurseries alongside pavilions from participating organisations. This platform aids productive families in showcasing their goods.
