Latifa Bint Mohammed Celebrates Global Talent At HIPA's Sustainability Awards Ceremony
The 13th annual Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) ceremony took place at the Museum of the Future. The event, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, celebrated the theme of 'Sustainability'. Dignitaries and global photography community members attended this prestigious event.
H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum awarded the $200,000 Grand Prize to Chinese photographer Liping Cao. His black-and-white photograph beautifully depicts wind turbines against a cloud-dotted sky, symbolising renewable energy's quiet strength. Sheikha Latifa emphasised Dubai's role as a hub for creativity and innovation, attracting talents from various fields.
Sheikha Latifa highlighted how HIPA aligns with the UAE’s Sustainable Development Goals. The award focuses on 'Sustainability', showcasing culture and arts' vital role in societal well-being. She stated that HIPA reflects Dubai’s cultural richness and its ability to connect people through visual storytelling.
Ali Khalifa bin Thalith, HIPA’s Secretary General, noted the award's expansion to 205 countries in its thirteenth year. He stressed the importance of advancing photographers and the industry. "H.H.’s vision for nurturing human creativity is apparent from his decision to raise the total prize purse under the award to $1 million," he said.
The emergence of Emirati and Arab photographers on the global stage was praised by Bin Thalith. He remarked, "The presence of winners from the UAE, Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Syria is evidence that Arab photographers have earned their place on the world stage." This highlights their growing influence in international photography.
Dutch photographer James ‘Jimmy’ Philip Nelson received the Photography Appreciation Award for his work with indigenous communities. His projects promote cultural understanding through photography. Emirati photographer Salma Ali Humaid Alsuwaidi won the Photography Content Creator Award for her book documenting UAE wildlife.
Award-Winning Contributions
The inaugural HIPA Photographer of the Year Award went to Syrian astrophotographer Samy Al Olabi. Known for capturing celestial objects in Arabian Peninsula's dark skies, his work is highly acclaimed. Sheikha Latifa honoured Ruijuan Huang from China with first prize in the 'Sustainability' category.
In other categories, Bin Thalith presented awards in 'General - Colour', where Rahul Vishwanath Sachdev from India won first place. Renee Capozzola from America secured first prize in 'General - Black and White'. Abdulrahman Al Owais honoured winners in 'Portfolio (Story-Telling)', with Palestinian Fatma Alzahra Shbair taking first place.
Diverse Categories Recognised
Hala Badri awarded Tobias Friedrich from Germany first prize in Sports Photography. In 'Short Video (For Social Media)', Aleksandr Tsuprun from Russia claimed top honours. These awards highlight diverse talents across various photography genres, celebrating creativity worldwide.
This year's HIPA ceremony underscored Dubai's commitment to fostering artistic talent globally while promoting sustainability themes through powerful visual narratives.
