Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre Strengthens Global Wetland Conservation By Joining Wetlands Link International
The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah has announced that the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre is now part of the Wetlands Link International (WLI) network. This global network supports environmental education centres focused on wetland conservation. This inclusion highlights Sharjah's dedication to protecting the environment and promoting sustainability.
Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the EPAA, stated that this membership strengthens Sharjah’s role as a leader in environmental research and education. She mentioned that the EPAA is committed to developing educational centres that promote environmental awareness, following the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi. His Highness's dedication to sustainability drives Sharjah’s environmental initiatives.

The Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre received this recognition due to its significant contributions to raising awareness about wetlands. The centre conducts various initiatives, educational programmes, and outreach activities, particularly around World Wetlands Day on February 2. These efforts have been crucial in promoting wetland conservation and supporting WLI's objectives globally.
The centre actively collaborates with other WLI member centres worldwide, sharing expertise to develop innovative educational programs. This collaboration is vital for creating long-term strategies for environmental awareness. The exchange of knowledge helps in crafting programs that educate people about the importance of wetlands.
The WLI network includes over 350 wetland education centres across six continents. It operates under a Memorandum of Understanding recognized by the Ramsar Convention. The network offers training, resources, and platforms for knowledge exchange, promoting global conservation practices through Communication, Education, Participation, and Awareness (CEPA) strategies.
Al Suwaidi also highlighted that EPAA had previously secured WLI membership for the Wasit Wetland Centre in February 2024. She expressed pride in Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre’s recent inclusion as it reflects EPAA’s effective policies and successful international collaborations. This membership will enhance international cooperation in environmental education.
Educational Initiatives and Future Plans
Through this new membership, the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre will continue offering advanced educational programs focusing on wetlands' role in mitigating climate change and supporting biodiversity. These programs aim to increase awareness of wetlands as essential ecosystems providing habitats for various marine and terrestrial species.
This achievement underscores Sharjah's commitment to fostering international partnerships for environmental education. By being part of the WLI network, Sharjah can further its efforts in sustainable education and biodiversity conservation on a global scale.
