Joby Aviation Takes Flight, Initiates Certification for UAE Air Taxi Operations

Joby Aviation, Inc, a company focused on developing electric air taxis for commercial use, has initiated steps to become a certified air taxi operator in the United Arab Emirates.

During the International Civil Aviation Organization's Advanced Air Mobility Summit in Montreal, Canada, JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, met with His Excellency Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi. They discussed Joby's Letter of Intent to start the Air Operator Certificate application process.

Joby Seeks Air Taxi Certification in UAE

In February 2024, Joby signed an agreement with Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) to introduce air taxi services in Dubai. This move aims to position Dubai as a leader in fast, clean, and quiet air mobility solutions.

The Joby Aviation S4 is designed to accommodate four passengers plus the pilot safely and securely. It is equipped with six propellers and four battery packs, enabling it to cover a maximum distance of 161 km. With a top speed of up to 321 km per hour, the aerial taxi is less noisy than helicopters. Its vertical take-off and landing capability makes it efficient for urban environments, eliminating the need for extensive horizontal space typically required for conventional stations.

By April 2024, Joby expanded its collaboration with the UAE through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) involving several Abu Dhabi departments. These include the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), the Department of Economic Development (DED), and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). This agreement facilitates Joby's plans to establish and scale air taxi services in Abu Dhabi.

The Air Operator Certificate from the GCAA is essential for commercial air transport operations in the UAE. Joby will undergo a five-stage application process that includes developing operating manuals, facility inspections, and GCAA observations of pilot and mechanic training.

Joby previously completed a similar certification process in the U.S., receiving its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration in May 2022. The company has been operating traditional aircraft in the U.S. for over two years, refining its intended air taxi operations using its proprietary ElevateOS software system.

Joby's electric air taxi is designed to carry a pilot and four passengers at speeds up to 200 miles per hour. A trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah, which usually takes 45 minutes by car, is expected to take just 10 minutes using this service.

"There is incredible momentum behind the adoption of clean flight across the UAE," said Bevirt. "We're excited to be working with a wide range of partners, including the GCAA, to lay the groundwork for one of the world's first electric air taxi networks."

Saif Al Suwaidi commented on Joby's progress: "The Letter of Intent for the operator certificate application from Joby Aviation marks a significant milestone in the UAE's journey towards becoming a global leader in EVTOL operations."

"Our readiness to support these advanced technologies underscores our commitment to fostering advanced air mobility solutions that will be part of the future of transportation in the UAE and beyond," he added. "We are excited to work closely with Joby Aviation to ensure the highest standards of safety and efficiency as we advance towards commercial EVTOL operations."

The collaboration between Joby Aviation and various UAE authorities highlights a significant step towards integrating electric vertical take-off and landing (EVTOL) technology into everyday transportation. This initiative aims not only at reducing travel time but also at promoting environmentally friendly travel options.
