Jawaher Al Qasimi Initiates University Grants To Empower Women In Morocco's Education Sector
H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, the wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, has initiated 65 university research grants in Morocco. This effort, under the Jawaher Fund for the Advancement of Women’s Education, is in partnership with Cadi Ayyad University and Al Akhawayn University. The initiative also includes projects in Al Haouz Province to empower rural women and support sustainable livelihoods after the September 2023 earthquake.
During her visit to Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, Sheikha Jawaher was welcomed by President Blaïd Bougadir and other staff members. She toured the Innovation Complex and research labs, learning about programmes that integrate empowerment into education and scientific research. She praised Moroccan women's achievements in these fields, highlighting their role as an inspiring model for Arab women.
The visit also included a Memorandum of Understanding signing between NAMA Women Advancement (NAMA) and Cadi Ayyad University. This agreement launched the Jawaher Fund for the Advancement of Women’s Education in Morocco. It aims to promote scientific research and expand postgraduate opportunities while integrating women's empowerment perspectives into research methodologies.
The agreement will provide 45 university research grants to postgraduate students. These grants will support academic projects focused on development and empowerment issues, preparing researchers to make a tangible impact in their communities. The signing was attended by H.E. Mariam Al Hammadi from NAMA and Blaïd Bougadir from Cadi Ayyad University.
Sheikha Jawaher also witnessed a cooperation agreement between NAMA Women Advancement and Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane. This agreement offers 20 research grants to faculty members and students across various disciplines. It aims to promote research that incorporates women's empowerment, enhancing their academic and social contributions.
The agreement was signed by Mariam Al Hammadi from NAMA and Dr. Amine Bensaid from Al Akhawayn University. With this partnership, the total number of research grants under the Jawaher Grant programme reaches 65.
Supporting Rural Communities
In addition to educational initiatives, Sheikha Jawaher met with leaders from the Mayshad Foundation in Morocco to discuss collaboration on social and economic initiatives for rural women. The meeting explored ways to empower women economically through various programmes, helping them achieve financial independence.
A tripartite cooperation agreement was signed between NAMA Women Advancement, The Big Heart Foundation (TBHF), and Morocco’s Mayshad Foundation. This agreement launches two development initiatives in Tansghart village aimed at empowering women and strengthening rural communities' resilience.
Building Sustainable Livelihoods
The first initiative focuses on improving livelihoods through sheep farming and livestock production projects for approximately 100 women. Participants will receive skills training, infrastructure support, and resources to establish small enterprises. They will also learn financial literacy, marketing, and market access skills to sustain their businesses.
The second initiative involves constructing an earthquake-resistant community centre funded by TBHF. This eco-friendly centre will offer educational, health, and economic services to over 1,000 residents in earthquake-affected areas.
Acknowledging Moroccan Women's Contributions
At the end of her visit, Sheikha Jawaher praised Moroccan women's strong presence in education, workforces, and cultural life. She affirmed that they embody determination, creativity, generosity, actively contributing to societal progress and stability.
"Every woman who learns, works, and produces lays a foundation stone in building her nation," said H.H. Sheikha Jawaher. "The Moroccan woman is an inspiring example for us all." Her delegation included key figures like Noura Al Noman from her Executive Office; Erum Mazher Alvie; Mariam Al Hammadi; Alya Al Musaiebi; along with team members from both organisations.
