International Museum Day 2025: DCT-Abu Dhabi Emphasises Culture And Human Connection For Future Progress
Mohammed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism–Abu Dhabi (DCT-Abu Dhabi), emphasised Abu Dhabi's commitment to a future shaped by ideas, heritage, and human connection. He highlighted this vision in an Op-ed for International Museum Day, stating that Abu Dhabi is a convergence point where East meets West, past meets future, and tradition meets ambition.
Al Mubarak noted that museums are evolving beyond being mere custodians of history. In today's world, marked by rapid technological changes and global uncertainties, they serve as catalysts for progress. They foster creativity, inclusion, and innovation to build more resilient societies. This aligns with the theme of this year's International Museum Day: The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.

The Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi exemplifies these values. It hosts a concentration of global institutions that celebrate cultural dialogue and creative exploration. This district is not just a hub for cultural excellence; it represents a commitment to nurturing knowledge and creativity, offering pathways for inspiration and transformation.
Each institution within the Saadiyat Cultural District has a unique role. For instance, Louvre Abu Dhabi showcases diverse artefacts from different eras and regions, highlighting how creative brilliance transcends borders. Meanwhile, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi explores the intersection of art, science, and technology, positioning the UAE at the forefront of future narratives.
Beyond Saadiyat Cultural District, Abu Dhabi's cultural strategy extends across the emirate. A network of museums and cultural centres ensures culture is deeply embedded in community life. Qasr Al Hosn has been transformed into a living museum narrating Abu Dhabi's evolution from a watchtower to a global city.
In Al Ain, significant sites like Al Ain Museum and Al Ain Palace Museum stand as symbols of national identity. These sites reflect the values and leadership that continue to shape the UAE's path forward. Additionally, Al Maqta Museum explores regional maritime heritage while Delma Museum delves into seafaring traditions.
Legacy of Sheikh Zayed
This approach honours Sheikh Zayed's legacy who understood culture's role in building a cohesive society long before the UAE's formation. His vision remains relevant today as it inspires future generations by preserving the past while looking forward.
The launch of the Abu Dhabi Collection this year marks another step forward in this journey. Curated over many years by DCT-Abu Dhabi, it includes thousands of works reflecting shared heritage across continents and centuries. The collection underscores that culture transcends borders and connects people globally.
Cultural Investment for Future Generations
As we navigate 21st-century challenges like demographic shifts and climate change, culture offers unique solutions by turning uncertainty into possibility. It reminds us that imagination drives progress and solutions are rooted in human experience.
On International Museum Day, Abu Dhabi reaffirms its belief in shaping the future through ideas rather than just data or infrastructure. By investing in cultural institutions and engaging communities creatively, we preserve our past while empowering present generations to inspire future ones.
