IKT Congress 2025 Concludes In Abu Dhabi, Highlighting Innovation In Contemporary Art
The International Association of Curators of Contemporary Art (IKT) Congress recently wrapped up its inaugural Gulf edition. This event, held from 8th to 14th April, was organised by NYU Abu Dhabi in collaboration with The Media Majlis Museum at Northwestern University in Qatar. It marked the first time this global congress took place in the Gulf region, bringing together a notable assembly of curators and art professionals.
Throughout the weeklong programme, participants engaged in curated exhibitions, symposiums, and tours. These activities facilitated collaboration with leading cultural institutions and experts across the region. The event kicked off in Doha at Northwestern University in Qatar (8–10 April), then moved to Abu Dhabi (11–12 April), Dubai (13 April), and concluded in Sharjah (14 April).

Maya Allison, Executive Director of the NYU Abu Dhabi Art Gallery, highlighted the significance of hosting the 2025 annual IKT Congress. She noted that it gathered an exceptional group of curators and cultural thinkers for inspiring artistic discussions. This gathering aimed to foster dialogue on innovative curatorial practices and arts.
Dr. Marwan Kraidy, Dean and CEO of Northwestern University in Qatar, remarked on the importance of hosting the IKT Congress as a milestone in their academic journey. He stated, "Hosting the IKT Congress was a milestone in our academic and cultural journey. We believe in the value of spaces that foster creativity and collaboration."
In Abu Dhabi, about 90 international curators participated in panel sessions focused on the UAE’s rapidly evolving cultural landscape. The day started with a keynote speech by Manal Ataya from Sharjah Museums Authority. This was followed by rapid case studies presented by UAE cultural leaders.
The panellists discussed ongoing transformations within UAE art institutions. They explored new approaches to rethinking institutional models, enhancing collaboration frameworks, and expanding art's role in public spaces.
Engaging Tours and Exhibitions
The congress concluded with a tour of NYU Abu Dhabi’s creative environment. Participants visited faculty and MFA student studios and enjoyed a guided tour of the Art Gallery’s current exhibition titled "Between the Tides: A Gulf Quinquennial." This exhibition showcased significant artistic productions from the region over five years.
Speakers at the event included Salwa Mikdadi from al Mawrid: Arab Center for Art Study at NYU Abu Dhabi; Stephanie Rosenthal from Guggenheim Abu Dhabi; among others. Their insights contributed to discussions on digital art practices and curatorial approaches.
