IGCF 2025 To Address Sustainability Challenges For Cities, Oceans, And Climate Change

The 14th International Government Communication Forum (IGCF) took place on 10–11 September, organised by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau. Themed "Communication for Quality of Life," it explored sustainability and environmental issues. Discussions focused on how communication can influence behaviour, foster partnerships, and offer solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

At the University of Sharjah Hall, a panel titled "Communication and Media for Climate Crisis Management" examined media's role in raising awareness during environmental crises. Strategies for crafting messages that build trust were discussed. Participants included Prof. Qassim Nasir from the Sharjah Smart Center for Climate Risk Management and Dr Shareefa Al-Marzouqi from the University of Sharjah’s Media Center.

IGCF 2025 Focuses on Sustainability and Climate

A session titled "How do we move Towards Smart and Sustainable Cities?" highlighted technology's role in designing cities that provide equitable services while reducing environmental impact. Speakers such as Sheikh Saud bin Sultan Al Qasimi from the Sharjah Digital Department and Sherif Tawfik from Microsoft discussed how AI and cloud computing can transform transport, health, and energy sectors.

In another session at the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority Hall, discussions centred on "Communicating for Sustainable Seas: From Strategy to Quality of Life on the Coast." This session emphasised communication's role in supporting aquaculture projects and engaging coastal communities. Speakers included His Excellency Ali Ahmed Abu Ghazin from the Sharjah Fish Resources Authority and Her Excellency Eng. Hiba Obaid Al Shehhi from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment.

The Forum also featured youth-centric sessions like "In the Voice of Childhood and Youth: Sustainability is a Trust Across Generations." Organised with the Arab Parliament for the Child, it provided a platform for young voices to share their views on sustainability. Another session focused on youth leadership in smart agriculture, recycling, and reducing food waste.

A workshop titled "Creating communication content in times of risk and crisis," led by Dr Engy Khalil from the University of Sharjah’s College of Communication, equipped journalists with tools to handle crises responsibly. The workshop aimed at producing credible digital content that raises community awareness effectively.

Educational Initiatives

The session "When Schools are Actively Acting On Sustainability" highlighted integrating quality-of-life concepts into basic education curricula. Speakers like Fatima Al Muslimi from the Prime Minister’s Office discussed incorporating food security and sustainability into education systems.

The Forum's agenda included over 110 activities across 22 platforms with more than 237 international speakers participating in 51 sessions. It addressed five global priorities: food security, public health, education, environmental sustainability, and green economy. Strategic communication was affirmed as crucial for driving impact and guiding policy towards a sustainable future.

Another significant discussion was held under the "Green Chair" initiative where student Rayan Bouslimi shared his experience representing UAE at an international AI Olympiad in China. This platform allowed youth to voice their ideas freely, aiding policymakers in shaping solutions through intergenerational dialogue.

A workshop titled "Sea Caves: A Natural Legacy with a Vital Role in Sustainability" reviewed Sharjah’s use of artificial sea caves to restore fish habitats. Led by His Excellency Dr Saif Mohammed Al Ghais from Ras Al Khaimah’s Environment Protection Authority, it engaged fishers and communities in marine conservation efforts.

The Forum also featured a session by the Arab Parliament for the Child focusing on promoting a culture of green economy among children. Contributions came from representatives like Dina Benimani from Morocco and Fajr Ahmed Al Dari from Bahrain.
