IDRA World Congress 2024 Kicks Off In Abu Dhabi To Tackle Global Water Scarcity Challenges
The International Desalination and Water Reuse World Congress 2024, hosted by Abu Dhabi's Department of Energy, commenced at the ADNEC Centre. Running until December 12, it gathers global leaders to tackle water scarcity. The event coincides with the UAE's 53rd Eid Al Etihad celebrations, reflecting on the nation's strides in innovation and sustainability.
Distinguished attendees included Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure; Sultan Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; Professor Hani Sewailam from Egypt; Engineer Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of Abu Dhabi's Department of Energy; and Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili. Ambassadors and experts in energy, water, and sustainability also participated.
Al Marar emphasised the congress's importance in his keynote speech. He stated that by 2035, 98% of Abu Dhabi's water production will use low-carbon reverse osmosis technology. This achievement highlights the Emirate’s dedication to sustainable water management and carbon reduction.
He further noted that by 2031, Abu Dhabi aims to produce over 3.5 million cubic metres of water daily while reducing carbon intensity by 93%. This sets a global standard for sustainable practices in water management.
The congress features over 200 speakers from more than 40 countries. They will engage in over 100 sessions discussing technical advancements, regulations, finance, and project models related to desalination and sustainable water management.
Upcoming events include the Leaders' Summit on December 10th, focusing on innovative solutions for water security. The Awards Program on December 11th at Emirates Palace Hotel will celebrate achievements in desalination and sustainability.
Abu Dhabi's Commitment to Clean Energy
Al Marar highlighted Abu Dhabi’s clean energy goals: "By 2035, 60% of Abu Dhabi’s electricity needs will be met through clean energy sources." Strategic projects in nuclear and solar energy are key drivers of this initiative.
The state-of-the-art reverse osmosis desalination plant in Al Taweelah was also mentioned. Producing 200 million imperial gallons daily, it exemplifies sustainability by significantly reducing energy consumption while meeting growing demand.

IDRA President Fady Juez stressed the urgency of addressing water scarcity: "The IDRA World Congress 2024 represents an extraordinary opportunity to double our collective efforts towards water solutions." He called for collaboration among stakeholders to innovate and secure a sustainable future.
